Three popular drugs -- Avelox, Cipro and Levaquin -- are super-heavyweights in the fight against serious bacterial diseases that plague humans. These powerful medications belong to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. They are highly effective in fighting hospital-acquired infections that can be resilient to lower-grade antibiotics.

Avelox, Cipro and Levaquin are extremely potent and have become a popular prescription for common ailments such as ear and sinus infections. These drugs are so popular that in 2010, Bayer’s Avelox and Cipro brought in $1 billion in sales while Johnson & Johnson’s Levaquin brought in 1.3 billion.

The benefit to thousands of consumers comes at a very steep price. The powerful medications eliminate infection but leave many consumers with a terrible condition known as peripheral neuropathy.

Cipro Warning: Take At Your Own Risk!
Cipro Warning: Take At Your Own Risk! Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

In 2010, I was prescribed the antibiotic Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) for a UTI. Upon the first dose, I experienced negative side effects and eventually discontinued taking the medicine. What I didn't know at the time was that this drug has a Black Box Warning. Even after stopping Cipro, I experienced horrific side effects. If you're taking Benzos or Cymbalta, never mix with Cipro. It can be lethal. In my case, there was NO consent.

Ciprofloxacin – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warning
Ciprofloxacin, marketed under brand names such as Cipro, Ciloxan, and Cetraxal, is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including urinary tract, respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, bone, joint, intra-abdominal infections, anthrax, and typhoid fever. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential for bacterial DNA processes, leading to bacterial cell death. Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues, CNS effects, hypersensitivity reactions, and musculoskeletal problems like tendinitis. Serious but rare side effects involve peripheral neuropathy, seizures, psychiatric effects, and QT prolongation. Dosages vary by infection type, patient age, and kidney function, with adjustments needed for renal impairment. Ciprofloxacin interacts with antacids, warfarin, theophylline, NSAIDs, and diabetes medications. Warnings include risks of tendinitis, tendon rupture, irreversible nerve damage, CNS effects, exacerbation of myasthenia gravis, QT prolongation, and hypersensitivity reactions, particularly cautioning use in pediatric patients due to potential effects on joint and cartilage development.

Hope for Those Suffering from Common Antibiotic Side Effect? Side Effects 0 Views • 2 months ago

Internal medicine specialist Dr. Mark Ghalili joins The Doctors to share about the side effects of fluoroquinolones, which can attack your tendons, commonly your Achilles tendon, as well as several other known side effects. He shares long-term effects do occur in most people who take this class of antibiotics. Dr. Ghalili has developed a regenerative medicine protocol that helped plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon, who is now feeling completely recovered after his Achilles tendon atrophied. Dr. Ordon stresses that ask your doctor if you really need an antibiotic and if there an antibiotic with fewer side effects that you can take.

‘I can’t walk today:’ 25 Investigates finds millions still prescribed risky antibiotic

Talia Smith, 44, of Norwood, said it felt like a “bomb went off” in her body in April 2021.

Days before that pain began, Smith had gone to the doctor suspecting a urinary tract infection.

After lab results confirmed she had a UTI, her doctor prescribed the commonly used antibiotic Cipro.

Otherwise known as ciprofloxacin, Cipro is part of a class of broad-spectrum antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones.

Its recommended uses include to treat anthrax, the plague, gonorrhea, typhoid fever, and complicated bacterial infections. Currently, about eight name-brand fluoroquinolones are on the market – but most people are prescribed dozens of generic options.

“I actually said: ‘This is a pretty strong antibiotic,’” Smith recalled in an interview with Investigative Reporter Ted Daniel. “Like, ‘Is this the right one I should be taking? And is there anything I need to know?’ And they actually told me, ‘No, there’s nothing you need to be aware of. This is a very safe and effective antibiotic for UTIs.’”

The FDA puts a black box warning on medications that can lead to death or serious injury.

That move followed years of advocacy and lawsuits filed by people suffering after administration of fluoroquinolones. Smith said her doctor did not inform her that the FDA has a black box warning label for Cipro and other fluoroquinolones.

The label says the class of antibiotics can cause “disabling and potentially irreversible serious adverse reactions”: including tendinitis, tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects. Other risks include worsening symptoms for those with myasthenia gravis. Central nervous system effects can range from nervousness, agitation, paranoia, convulsions, and dizziness to increased intracranial pressure.

The black box warning label makes clear that prescribers should prescribe antibiotics like Cipro with caution – and for uncomplicated UTIs only when no alternative treatment will work.

“Because fluoroquinolones, including CIPRO, have been associated with serious adverse reactions, reserve CIPRO XR for use in patients who have no alternative treatment options for uncomplicated urinary tract infections,” the label reads.

25 Investigates analyzed federal prescribing data and found that despite years of warning, millions of people are still receiving prescriptions for fluoroquinolones – and that it’s unclear just how many of those prescriptions are unnecessary, or how many have caused harm to patients.

Learn what ciprofloxacin is good for, when to use it, what are the side effects of ciprofloxacin, and when to choose another antibiotic.
Ciprofloxacin is the go-to antibiotic for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) like acute pyelonephritis and prostatitis, respiratory infections like pneumonia, and many other infections. Is this antibiotic really that good, or should we change something, and WHY?

If you want to truly master antibiotics and learn how to use them to treat the most common and most severe infections with confidence, here is a link to my online course, which includes the first three crucial lessons:
