Vaginal Bleeding On Your Morning After Pill - What it means | Has The Pill Worked?

If you have morning-after pill bleeding, what does it mean?
What are the pill side effects you should expect?

If you've had an experience of unusual bleeding - does it mean the pill worked or not?
Using emergency contraception can lead to a change in your menstrual cycle with unpredicted vaginal bleeding.

Emergency contraceptive pills like Plan B, Take Action, Levonelle, Ella, Ellaone, Postinor, Postpill and so on work by delaying ovulation primarily.
So your best chance to be sure it's effective means taking the pill as soon as possible after sex, and it's more likely to work before ovulation.

FDA Info on Plan B and interactions

What is Plan B One Step Contraceptive Pill
Its the #1 OB/GYN recommended emergency contraception brand chosen by millions of women. It contains 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel which is a progestin only contraceptive at a higher dose, and it’s one pill to be taken as just one dose as soon as the unprotected encounter took place. That is the key takeaway here. The more time that has passed since the encounter, the less effective the medication becomes. To play it safe, don’t let over 3 days or 72 hours pass from the time you last had unprotected intimacy to take plan b.
How effective is plan b?
When used as directed, about 7 out of every 8 women who could have gotten pregnant did not become pregnant after taking Plan B. And if you’re into percentages, if taken correctly within that 3 day window, it can reduce the chances of pregnancy by up to 89% after only ONE act of unprotected intimacy or birth control failure takes place.
Is plan b abortion?
#1 It is NOT an abortion pill and the science shows us that it will not affect an existing pregnancy, cause a birth defect or cause a miscarriage.
#2 It is not a way to protect against (STDs).
#3 It is not to be used in place of your regular birth control, because there are cheaper and more effective methods of birth control out there and if you use plan b too often, your cycle could become too irregular to know when you’re actually fertile or not, so think of it as a backup, hence why its called plan b.
#4 It will not impact a woman's future fertility, which a lot of people can be concerned with. Many women were still able to and are still able to get pregnant safely after they have taken plan b.
#5 A dose of Plan B in the a.m. is not a hall pass for endeavors in the p.m. While Plan B-stays in your body a few days after taking it, the levels in your body decrease within hours of when the dose is taken, which means the effectiveness of Plan B (against future encounters) is greatly reduced.

How does plan b work?
It helps prevent pregnancy before it even starts and it does so by temporarily delaying ovulation, if there is no fertilization taking place, no pregnancy occurs

Is plan b safe?
Plan b isn’t for everyone: lets say if You're allergic to any component inside plan b, taking certain medications that can decrease the effectiveness of plan b, such as barbiturates or St. John's wort just as 2 examples. Then plan b may not be for you.

Plan b if you weigh over 165
Then there’s the question of being overweight and obese. This argument stems from: 2011, where some studies indicated that Plan B Emergency Contraception (containing levonorgestrel) wasn’t effective for women over a certain weight. This prompted the European Medicines Agency which is (the FDA equivalent in Europe) to approve a label change warning women of the possible reduced efficacy if they were overweight. Which then prompted the (FDA) to conduct its own review, over whether plan b needed an updated label as well. The FDA concluded that the data concerning the effectiveness of levonorgestrel in women who weigh more than 165 pounds or have a BMI of more than 25 was inconclusive. The (FDA) doesn’t specifically warn women about this on the labeling, and there doesn’t seem to be anything detailed about this on the Plan B website either.

How to know if plan b worked
You will know your Plan B® has worked when you get your next period, which should come at the expected time, or within a week of the expected time.

Emergency Contraception: What They Don’t Tell You!
Emergency Contraception: What They Don’t Tell You! Side Effects 2 Views • 5 months ago

Emergency contraception (EC) is a crucial option for preventing unintended pregnancies after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. Many misconceptions surround EC, so understanding its types, effectiveness, and proper use is essential.

What Are Emergency Contraceptives?

Emergency contraceptives are methods used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. They work primarily by delaying ovulation, preventing fertilization, or hindering implantation. EC is not an abortion pill and will not affect an existing pregnancy.

Types of Emergency Contraceptives

Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECPs)

Levonorgestrel (Plan B One-Step, Take Action, My Way, etc.): Available over the counter, most effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

Ulipristal Acetate (Ella): Requires a prescription, remains effective up to 5 days after unprotected sex, and works better than levonorgestrel, especially later in the timeframe.

Copper Intrauterine Device (IUD)

The most effective form of emergency contraception, reducing the risk of pregnancy by over 99% when inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex. Additionally, it can serve as long-term contraception.

How Effective Are Emergency Contraceptives?

Effectiveness depends on the method and timing of use:

Levonorgestrel: Reduces the chance of pregnancy by 75-89% when taken within 72 hours.

Ulipristal Acetate: About 85% effective, maintaining higher efficacy closer to the 5-day window.

Copper IUD: Over 99% effective, making it the best option for emergency contraception.

Who Can Use Emergency Contraceptives?

Most individuals can safely use EC, but effectiveness may vary based on weight, health conditions, and drug interactions. Ulipristal acetate may be less effective in individuals with a higher BMI, and consulting a healthcare provider can help determine the best option.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Common side effects of ECPs include:

Nausea

Fatigue

Irregular bleeding

Headaches

Breast tenderness
The copper IUD may cause cramping and heavier periods initially.

How to Access Emergency Contraception

Levonorgestrel-based pills are available without a prescription at most pharmacies.

Ulipristal acetate requires a prescription and may be found at clinics or online pharmacies.

A copper IUD must be inserted by a healthcare professional at a clinic.

Emergency contraception is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. Knowing your options and acting quickly increases the chances of success. If you are unsure about the best choice for you, consult a healthcare provider for guidance.
