Clinicians have been using Wellbutrin to treat ADHD for at least three decades. Although the details still remain murky, Wellbutrin acts primarily as a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. In humans, the norepinephrine effect appears to be more potent than the dopamine effect.
Several studies, albeit with small numbers of patients, have shown Wellbutrin to be effective in reducing ADHD symptoms in children, adolescents, and adults. Wellbutrin helps at least as much as does Strattera (atomoxetine) and in several studies appears to be as effective as Ritalin (methylphenidate). Wellbutrin may be particularly attractive for those who want to avoid stimulant medications, and the potential for addiction.
Confusion exists among most doctors, pharmacists and patients about the differences between the three formulations of bupropion (immediate release IR, sustained release SR, and extended release ER or XL). Although the XL form was approved for once a day dosing, this does NOT mean that medication is released steadily throughout a 24 hour period.

Wellbutrin (bupropion) is a prescription antidepressant, and many people like it since it’s less likely to cause sexual dysfunction or weight gain (compared to typical antidepressants). However, Wellbutrin does have other side effects, including sleep problems. In this video, learn why and how to cope with insomnia from Wellbutrin.

Some people have a good initial response to Wellbutrin — more energy, more motivation — but then, suddenly, it stops working. Why does this happen? Wellbutrin increases dopamine and norepinephrine, but the brain adapts over time, leading to tolerance effect. Many people experience this sudden drop in effectiveness.

Frustrated with SSRI antidepressants that take forever to work? ⏳💊 Auvelity, FDA-approved in 2022, offers a new approach to treating depression by combining bupropion and dextromethorphan for a synergistic effect on dopamine, norepinephrine, and NMDA receptors. 🧠 This means faster symptom relief and fewer side effects like sexual dysfunction. ❌❤️ Clinical studies show it outperforms both placebo and bupropion alone, with a 46% remission rate in just six weeks! But no treatment is perfect—insomnia, dizziness, and increased blood pressure are possible side effects. Is this the right medication for you? Talk to your doctor and always make informed decisions. I've been using Wellbutrin, commonly known as Bupropion, for 8 years and will share my experience in this video. It's popular because it doesn't cause weight gain or sexual dysnfunction compared to other anti-depressants. I’ll be explaining what issues I’ve encountered with it, what benefits I’ve reaped, and particular circumstances in which it could be good for others.

I've struggled with neurological issues for the past year and was told by 8 neurologists that I was suffering from anxiety and needed psychiatric help and anti-anxiety medication. My stuttering, palsy, stumbling, fatigue, and the pins and needles in my fingers and toes were all the result of Wellbutrin, aka bupropion. Once I was weaned off Wellbutrin, my symptoms disappeared. WTF! Talk to your doctor if you have symptoms that can't be explained. They may be coming from your medication. Read more about the side effects of bupropion here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20680187

This is an informational overview video on Bupropion. Bupropion is available under several brandnames: Wellbutrin and Zyban. It is only available as a tablet.
When to use it?
Bupropion can be used to treat a depression, and secondly bupropion can also be used to support stoping smoking.
And for those of you watching, planning to quit smoking, I have already made a more general video on “how to quit smoking”, that provides you with all the necessary tips and tricks! You can find it here: https://youtu.be/WSUbXPGOBdw
How to use it?
Swallow it tablet whole, with a glass of water. Do not chew on it or crush it.
And always take it at fixed times; preferably in the morning (if you need to take 1 tablet) or in the morning and afternoon (if you need to take it twice a day). Prevent taking it in the evening.
What is the correct dosage?
Wellbutrin: to treat depressions.
Starting dose: 150 mg 1x/day
Zyban: to quit smoking.
Quit smoking: Zyban:
Starting dose: 150mg 1/day, and after 4 weeks it can be increased to 150mg 2/day.
If you forget to take a dose, than skip it, and take the next tablet when you usually do so.
If you are looking for a video on nicotine substitutes, like the nicotine patches, check it out here:
https://youtu.be/VHbbZyUDFzw.
If you are looking for a video on Varenicline, than you can find it here:
https://youtu.be/osVTf4Un_3c
What are the side-effects?
(Very) common (≥ 10%):
Insomnia, headache, dizziness, shaking of your hands, concentration problems, sadness, agitation, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, belly pain, constipation, dry mouth, fever, skin irritations (itching, red spots).
Uncommon (0.1-1%):
Weight loss, fast beating heart, increased blood pressure, chest pain, confusion, hearing of a squeaky sound.
Rarely (0,01-0,1%):
Low blood pressure, muscle twitching, cramps, and an allergic reactions.
Stay safe while using Bupropion:
Avoid driving your car the first week you are using bupropion. This is because you might experience some side effects like dizziness and confusion. Which do not exactly make driving very safe. The same is true every time your dose is increased.
Now after 1 week most people are used to the effects, and than it is safe again to drive. However only do so if indeed your are not experience these side effects.
Secondly, I would also advice you to avoid alcohol, as it may increase the side effects of bupropion.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
Try to avoid bupropion, if possible.
It is unclear if it is harmful for you baby, but there are signs it could. So my advice would be to avoid it, and try to use other medicines which are not harmful for your child.

There is a common misconception in mental health treatment that Bupropion tends to worsen anxiety symptoms in patients with depression. This causes many doctors to avoid using the medication for the treatment of depression. However, no one ever bothers to ask where this concept comes from and what does the evidence really say about worsening anxiety when using bupropion. The topic of today’s video is bupropion and anxiety

This video is a comprehensive Wellbutrin review covering its indications, mechanism of action, everything you need to know about bupropion side-effects, and more. The FDA approved indications for Wellbutrin (bupropion) include major depressive disorder treatment, seasonal affective disorder medication, smoking cessation aid (marketed as Zyban), and weight loss when combined with naltrexone (Contrave) or dextromethorphan (Aplenzin).
As a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), Wellbutrin's mechanism of action involves inhibiting the reuptake of these neurotransmitters. Common Wellbutrin side-effects include dry mouth, nausea, headache, insomnia, and tremor. More serious potential bupropion side-effects are seizure risk, sjs (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), hypomania/mania, blood pressure elevation, and increased suicidal thoughts/behaviors in youth.
Important Wellbutrin drug interactions to consider include CYP2D6 inhibition affecting codeine, beta blockers, and atomoxetine metabolism. Caution is advised with MAOI combinations due to hypertensive crisis risk from increased catecholamines. Wellbutrin's active metabolites like hydroxybupropion contribute to its therapeutic effects. Overall, this comprehensive Wellbutrin medication review covers key aspects for prescribers.

Dr. Pagnani of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates discusses Wellbutrin (Buproprion) and its off-label use in the treatment of Adult ADHD. Wellbutrin (buproprion) is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which is FDA approved for the treatment of depression. Unlike antidepressants such as SSRIs or SNRIs, this medication does NOT increase availability of serotonin, and therefore, does NOT treat anxiety (in fact, it can make anxiety and irritability worse). It is also used for smoking cessation (with the Trade name Zyban). Other side effects include increased risk for seizure (making it a non-ideal option for individuals with eating disorders or alcohol use disorders [as it can be dangerous for these individuals]), increased intra-ocular pressure, dry mouth, constipation, tachycardia, sweating, insomnia, upset stomach, decreased appetite (and weight loss) and others. With that said, this may be a good option for some patients, particularly as it does not have the abuse potential, of stimulants like adderall, ritalin, vyvanse and concerta.
Dr. Pagnani is the founder and medical director of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates, an Instructor at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for the Department of Psychiatry, he supervises psychiatric residents at Jefferson Hospital, he serves on the Young Professional Board of Uplift, the Center for Grieving Children and he maintains a private practice of Psychiatry in Philadelphia where he sees patients for one-time psychiatric evaluations and second opinions. He is a licensed physician and surgeon in NJ, PA, NY, MD, DE, FL and CA and can provide consultations to individuals via HIPAA compliant Telehealth visits living in these locations.
Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates is a private practice of psychiatry consisting of about 25 psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychotherapists with physical locations in Philadelphia and Paoli, PA and serving all of PA, NJ, NY and FL virtually via HIPAA compliant tele-psychiatry. Individuals seeking not only evaluations but long-term psychiatric care, can contact Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates directly.
These videos aim to increase awareness and discussion of mental health topics and to encourage struggling individuals to schedule an appointment directly with a mental health provider. Mental health needs to be normalized, and simply speaking about mental health topics openly, is an important first step.
Dr. Pagnani and Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates are NOT advocating for or against the use of any mentioned psychiatric medications for any specific individual. Additionally, any side effects mentioned are not a complete list of potential side effects or contraindications to taking any mentioned medications, and all risks and benefits of a medication should be discussed with an individual’s provider at an appointment, before starting, stopping or making changes to a medication regimen.
