Amoxicillin Vs Amoxicillin clavulanate for treating acute sinusitis in children

For treating Acute sinusitis in children both amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanate were equally effective, but amoxicillin-clavulanate had higher rates of gastrointestinal symptoms and yeast infections, a recent study published in JAMA has shown.
Acute sinusitis is one of the most common causes for children to be put on antibiotic medications. The drugs amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanate make up most of those prescriptions, but there is a lack of consensus on which should be first-line for children.
To fill this knowledge gap Brigham researchers analyzed the treatment outcomes of over 300,000 children who were prescribed either of the two drugs. They found that there was no difference in the rates of treatment failure — that is, having to go on a new course of antibiotics or seek additional treatment for sinusitis or complications — between patients prescribed amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanate. Treatment failure was so rare, in fact, that the study’s authors say that physicians should be confident that either medication will clear a case of acute sinusitis that requires antibiotics. However, the risk of adverse events, especially gastrointestinal symptoms and yeast infections, was higher among those prescribed amoxicillin-clavulanate.
The clinical data showed that adverse events were somewhat rare but more frequent among patients treated with amoxicillin-clavulanate, occurring in 2.3% of patients treated with amoxicillin-clavulanate and 2% of patients treated with amoxicillin. Patients treated with amoxicillin-clavulanate had a 15% increased risk of gastrointestinal side effects and a 33% higher risk of yeast infections compared to patients treated with amoxicillin. The study’s authors conclude that the more narrow-spectrum amoxicillin may be the best first-line choice to combat acute sinusitis.

This video is about Augmentin. Augmentin is a widely prescribed antibiotic that combines two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic, works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. However, some bacteria produce an enzyme called beta-lactamase, which can break down amoxicillin, rendering it ineffective. This is where clavulanate potassium comes in. It is a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which protects amoxicillin from being destroyed by these enzymes, thus enhancing its effectiveness against a broader range of bacterial infections.

Augmentin is commonly prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory infections (like pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis), ear infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs), skin infections, and dental infections. It can be used for both adults and children, although dosages vary depending on the patient’s age, weight, and the severity of the infection.

Augmentin is typically administered orally in the form of tablets, chewable tablets, or liquid suspension. It is essential to take it exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider to ensure its effectiveness and reduce the risk of resistance. The duration of treatment depends on the infection being treated, but it is often prescribed for 7 to 10 days.

While Augmentin is highly effective, it can have side effects, including gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. Allergic reactions, though rare, can occur, and these can include rashes or, in severe cases, anaphylaxis. It is important to inform a doctor of any history of allergies or liver issues before starting the medication.

In conclusion, Augmentin is a valuable antibiotic that treats a range of bacterial infections, thanks to the combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, offering enhanced protection against resistant bacteria.

your tablet augmentin
Overview
Amoxicillin is oral semisynthetic aminopenicillin similar to ampicillin. Amoxicillin is more stable to gastric acids and more bioavailable than other penicillins. It inhibits the 3rd and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins PBPS that are located inside the bacterial cell wall and are responsible for several steps in the synthesis of the cell wall. Chemically Amoxicillin is D-(-)-a-amino-p-hydroxy-benzyl penicillin. Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic and has bactericidal activity against many gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Antibiotics require constant drug level in body for therapeutic effect. This is achieved by taking the drug at regular intervals of time throughout the day and night as prescribed. Amoxicillin is important to take the drug for the full time period as prescribed. If you discontinue the drug it may result in ineffective treatment.

Indications
Amoxicillin is primarily indicated in conditions like Abscesses, Acute bronchitis, Bacteriuria, Bronchitis, Carbuncles, Cellulitis, Chronic bron- chitis, Cystitis, Dental abscess, Dental abscess (short-course), Endocarditis, Furunculosis, Gon- orrhoea, Gynecological infections, Haemophilus influenzae infections, Helicobacter pylori eradication, Infected wounds, Inflammatory bowel disease, Lower respiratory tract infections, Meningitis, Metastatic, Metastatic colorectal cancer, Mild to moderate chronic heart failure, Muscle relaxation (short duration) for surgery, Muscle relaxation during intensive care, Muscle relaxation for surgery or intubation, Osteomyelitis, Otitis media, Parathyroid fever, Peritonitis, Pharyngitis, Pneumonia, Puerperal sepsis, Pyelonephritis, Septic abortion, Septicaemia, Sinusitis, Skin infections, Soft tissue infections, Surgical infections, Syphilis, Systemic infections, Tonsillitis, Typhoid, Urinary tract infection.

Overview
Clavulanic Acid is a ß lactamase inhibitor. Clavulanic Acid is structurally related to the penicillins and used in combination with penicillin antibiotic to treat variety of bacterial infections. Antibiotics require constant drug level in body for therapeutic effect. This is achieved by taking the medication at regular interval of time throughout the day and night as prescribed. Clavulanic Acid is important to take the drug for the full time period as prescribed. If you discontinue the therapy it may result in
ineffective treatment.

▪ Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic. Clavulanate potassium helps prevent certain bacteria from becoming resistant to amoxicillin.
▪ Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is a combination medicine used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin.
▪ Common side effects may include: severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody, nausea, vomiting; diarrhea; rash, itching; vaginal itching or discharge; or diaper rash.
▪ Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormonal birth control (condom, diaphragm, cervical cap, or contraceptive sponge) to prevent pregnancy.
▪ Avoid taking this medicine together with or just after eating a high-fat meal. This will make it harder for your body to absorb the medication. Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, call your doctor before using anti-diarrhea medicine.

Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Augmentin Understanding the Uses and Potential Side Effects
Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Augmentin Understanding the Uses and Potential Side Effects Side Effects 2 Views • 24 days ago

Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, commonly known as Augmentin, is a combination antibiotic medication that is widely used to treat a broad range of bacterial infections. The combination of amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic, and clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, provide a stronger and broader spectrum of coverage than amoxicillin alone, making it a very effective treatment option for certain types of infections that may be resistant to other antibiotics.
One of the main indications of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia. It is also commonly used to treat urinary tract infections, skin infections, and some dental infections. Additionally, it is often prescribed as a prophylactic treatment for people who are at a high risk of developing certain types of bacterial infections.
Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is usually administered orally, as a tablet or a liquid suspension. The typical adult dose ranges from 250mg to 500mg, taken two to three times per day, depending on the severity of the infection. The duration of treatment depends on the type and severity of the infection, but typically lasts for 7 to 10 days.
Like all medications, amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium also has some side effects. The most common side effects include gastrointestinal distress, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Allergic reactions, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, can also occur in rare cases. It's important to speak with your healthcare provider if you experience any unusual symptoms while taking the medication.
It's also important to note that amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium can interact with certain other medications, such as blood thinners, and some pain relievers, so it's crucial to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking prior to starting treatment with amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium.
In conclusion, amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is a safe and effective antibiotic combination that can be used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, particularly those that may be resistant to other antibiotics. However, as with any medication, it is important to be aware of the potential side effects and to speak with your healthcare provider if you experience any unusual symptoms while taking the medication. It is also important to take the medication as prescribed by your healthcare provider and to keep all appointments with them to monitor your progress.

Amoxicillin | Bacterial Targets, Mechanism of Action, Adverse Effects | Antibiotic Lesson
Amoxicillin | Bacterial Targets, Mechanism of Action, Adverse Effects | Antibiotic Lesson Side Effects 0 Views • 24 days ago

Lesson on the antibiotic amoxicillin, what bacteria amoxicillin targets, the mechanism of action of amoxicillin, contraindications of amoxicillin usage, and adverse effects of amoxicillin. Amoxicillin is an aminopenicillin antibiotic that has a broad spectrum of targets including gram positive cocci, enterococci, and gram negative bacteria including E. coli, shigella and salmonella. However, recent antibiotic resistance has rendered amoxicillin less effective. In this lesson, we also discuss how bacteria become resistant to amoxicillin and what can be used to increase the effectiveness of amoxicillin against bacteria that have become resistant to amoxicillin. We discuss infections that amoxicillin can be used for (urinary tract infections, middle ear infections).

NOTE: The Gram Negative “Aerobes” discussed in the video are actually “Facultative Anaerobes”, although they act as “aerobes” in the presence of oxygen.

Hey everyone! This is another antibiotic lesson! In this lesson, you will learn about the antibiotic amoxicillin, the gram positive and gram negative bacteria that amoxicillin targets, how amoxicillin works, and some contraindications of amoxicillin usage along with a long list of adverse reactions associated with amoxicillin usage. If you found this video helpful, please like and subscribe for more videos :)

Augmentin 625 Duo Tablet is a combination of two medicines: Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid. Amoxycillin is an antibiotic. It works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering which is essential for the survival of bacteria. Clavulanic Acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor which reduces resistance and enhances the activity of Amoxycillin against bacteria.

Augmentin 625 Tablet is best taken with a meal to reduce the chance of a stomach upset. You should take it regularly at evenly spaced intervals as per the schedule prescribed by your doctor. Taking it at the same time every day will help you to remember to take it. The dose will depend on what you are being treated for but you should always complete a full course of this antibiotic as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking it until you have finished, even when you feel better. If you stop taking it early some bacteria may survive and the infection may come back or worsen.

The most common side effects of this medicine include vomiting nausea and diarrhea. These are usually mild but let your doctor know if they bother you or will not go away.
