Heart disease remains America's number one cause of death, claiming one out of every five lives lost. However, doctors say many of these deaths are preventable if we make certain changes to our lifestyles, such as lowering cholesterol.
More than 200 million people worldwide take a statin drug because of its ability to significantly lower LDL, or so-called "bad" cholesterol.
However, statins aren't perfect medicines. Research shows up to 29 percent of statin users complain of side effects. Muscle symptoms, like pain, weakness and cramps, are by far the most common, but others include stomach problems and fatigue.

Dr. Maryanne Demasi earned a Ph.D. in rheumatology from the University of Adelaide, but perhaps the most formative experience she had with the medical sciences occurred while she was an investigative journalist with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). During her tenure with the ABC, she produced a two-part series called “Heart of the Matter,” which challenged the role of cholesterol in heart disease and addressed the overprescription of statin drugs. The fallout from the series was not swift, but it was decisive. In this presentation, delivered on June 8, 2019, at a CrossFit Health event at CrossFit Headquarters, Demasi shares her personal experiences and the challenges she faced while trying to relay the limitations of statin data to the public.
Demasi recalls how, while performing research for her projects as a medical reporter, she would often do a deep dive into the science and … would come out with very disappointing conclusions.” “Over my career,” she explains, “I started to become a little dismayed with the quality of the science.” She describes uncovering methodological problems and argues that such problems contribute to the replication crisis, produce conflicting health recommendations, and lead to dwindling trust in medical professionals.
Demasi has devoted a considerable amount of time to researching and relaying the corruption inherent in what she terms the "Statin Wars." By way of offering background on the “acrimonious debate … about statins,” she explains, “I think a lot of the problems started in the mid-80s when former U.S. President Ronald Reagan decided to significantly slash funding to the National Institutes of Health.” This shift, she claims, “allowed private industry to move in and start funding their own clinical trials.”
The problem with industry’s infiltration of the health sciences, she explains, became abundantly clear as she researched the "Statin Wars." She notes the drug companies began to design their own clinical trials without oversight by unbiased parties. In addition, she explains, “we started to discover through legal suits that pharmaceutical companies were hiring marketing firms or getting marketing people to do the first drafts of their manuscripts that they would submit for peer review in order to give a positive spin on the trial data." She notes that although such practices “might not sound ethical, it’s a perfectly legal thing to be doing.”
In the documentary series “Heart of the Matter,” she and her colleagues shared these findings and highlighted that the benefits of statins had been exaggerated while their side effects had been downplayed. Despite receiving accolades for hard-hitting reporting and carefully executed research, Demasi and her colleagues eventually started receiving backlash, first from the Australian Heart Foundation and then from the Cholesterol Treatment Trialists Collaboration (CTT). By December 2016, Demasi, along with the colleagues who worked on the series with her, was out of a job.

0:25 Cholesterol functions

2:35 What you could do
Today, we’re going to talk about statins and statin side effects. Statins work by blocking a certain enzyme that blocks your production of cholesterol. Your liver cells make a good amount of cholesterol in your body. The cholesterol in your body is not just coming from the diet. It’s also coming from your own cells.
Cholesterol is a precursor for making bile salts. Bile salts are involved in digesting fats and absorbing fat-soluble vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids. If you don’t have enough bile salts, your risk for gallstones goes up as well as the risk of pancreatitis.
A big side effect of statins is myopathy. This is a general term for muscle disease. Another side effect is high levels of creatine kinase, which can indicate muscle wasting. Statins can also deplete CoQ10, which is an enzyme involved in giving your muscles energy.
If you’re deficient in CoQ10, you could experience:
• Muscle wasting
• Muscle weakness
• Lower back pain
• Heart failure
• And more…
Taking CoQ10 while taking statins could help diminish the symptoms of myopathy.

This lecture is part 2 of 3 delivered by Dr Mason at the Low Carb Down Under Gold Coast conference in October 2022. Dr Mason exposes the catastrophic harms caused by the first cholesterol lowering drug, Triparanol, and the guilty verdict that followed.
This is followed by a brief history of statins, including the high rates of cancer in test animals seen with the first statin to come to market, and the massive (+$1,000,000,000) legal payouts made to settle lawsuits from statin side effects.
Specific statin side effects, including dementia are covered, followed by a close analysis of the measurable benefits that may be attributed to statins. This includes a review of a recent paper co-authored by David Diamond, Ben Bikman and Paul Mason that discusses how to identify who is likely and not likely to benefit from statin therapy using triglyceride and LDL levels.

Dr Paul Mason obtained his medical degree with honours from the University of Sydney. He is also a fellow of the Australasian College of Sports and Exercise Physicians, holds a Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy and a Masters degree in Occupational Health. A new study confirms a side effect link between statin use and tendon problems like tendonitis and tendinopathies. The risk of developing tendon issues is higher in the initial 3 months of statin use, but it decreases as cumulative dosage increases. Atorvastatin and simvastatin have the highest rates of tendinopathy, while rosuvastatin has higher rates of certain tendinopathies but not others.
Poor metabolic health also raises the risk of tendon problems, irrespective of statin use. To improve metabolic health, focus on an anti-inflammatory diet with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats, and engage in both aerobic and strength training exercises. Decisions about statin use should be based on individual risk factors and medical history, and it's essential to consult with a healthcare provider.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 100 million Americans have high cholesterol. Statins are medications that lower cholesterol levels. But, who should take them? A study in the New England Journal of Medicine reports that statins lower the risk of cardiovascular events in people at medium risk without cardiovascular disease.
In this Mayo Clinic Minute, reporter Vivien Williams talks to cardiologist Dr. Stephen Kopecky about statins and the study.
