Adults and children at least 12 years old who have traveler's diarrhoea due to certain bacteria can be treated with 200 mg tablets of Rifaximin. Rifaximin 550 mg tablets are used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (with diarrhoea) in adults with liver disease as well as to prevent episodes of hepatic encephalopathy, which are changes in thinking, behaviour, and personality brought on by an accumulation of toxins in the brain. Rifaximin belongs to the group of drugs known as antibiotics. By inhibiting the growth of the bacteria that cause diarrhoea, rifaximin cures irritable bowel syndrome and traveler's diarrhoea. By inhibiting the growth of bacteria that create toxins and may exacerbate liver illness, rifaximin treats hepatic encephalopathy.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth(SIBO) Steals Your Nutrients – Dr.Berg

SIBO is very common and can create nutritional deficiencies that damage your health.

0:00 SIBO can steal your nutrients and damage your health
1:17 I explain what causes SIBO
2:03 And here’s what you can do about it

In this video, I explain how SIBO can steal your nutrients and, as a result, damage your health.

SIBO stands for small intestine bacterial overgrowth. Here’s what happens: normally, your friendly bacteria live in your large intestine. But if they migrate to your small intestine, the microbes start fermenting your carbohydrates and eating your nutrients — especially B12, iron, and bile.

Bloating, abdominal pain and gas are some of the side effects, but the most consequential one is nutritional deficiencies. When you’re deficient in B12, you could have serious neurological issues, shooting, stabbing pain, and anemia among other symptoms. An iron deficiency will also cause anemia as well as fatigue. And if you’re too low in bile, you can’t digest fats thus you’re unable to extract fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E as well as vitamin K and essential fatty acids.

SIBO can develop because of many things. One is if your digestive system was surgically altered, allowing the bacteria to go into the small intestine. Or it can occur if you don’t have enough stomach acid to kill off microbes, which arrive with your food then can pass through to the small intestine.

Here’s what you can do if you have SIBO:

● Increase your stomach acid. Start by taking betaine hydrochloride, in pill form. Take at least five before each meal.
● Take apple cider vinegar regularly. You can get pills that combine betaine hydrochloride with apple cider vinegar.
● Do intermittent fasting to give your digestive system a chance to reset and clean itself out. When you fast, your food tends to be washed into the large intestine by the hair-like cilia in your bowel. I believe you can never fully handle SIBO unless you do intermittent fasting.
● Avoid prebiotics; that is, fiber, for at least a month to six weeks. Yes, I include not eating vegetables in this recommendation. Microbes will ferment the fiber.
● Avoid probiotics too, as part of keeping down your microbe numbers. And definitely don’t take products that combine pre-and probiotics!
● Take an herbal antibiotic such as oregano, thyme, or cloves to create an antimicrobial environment.

SIBO is way more common than you may know; and, one of the major problems with it is the nutritional deficiencies it can create, which will damage your health.

Rifaximin (Xifaxan): Why It May or May Not Improve Your SIBO and How to Make It Work for You Side Effects 1 Views • 15 days ago

Rifaximin is one of the most common antibiotics prescribed for SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth). It is a relatively safe antibiotic and can help reduce hydrogen dominant bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. There are, however, some drawbacks associated with its use, of which, many people are sadly unaware.

In this Fix Your Gut YouTube video I discuss:

What is the rifamycin class of antibiotics?
What is rifampin used for and do I recommend it?
What is rifabutin used for and do I recommend it?
Does rifabutin work for anti-MAP therapy for ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease?
What is rifaximin (Xifaxan) used for and do I recommend it?
What are the side effects of each medication?
How should Xifaxan be taken for SIBO-D to improve its effectiveness?
Does Xifaxan work for SIBO-C?
Does Xifaxan work for stomach or colonic dysbiosis?

Rifaximin Tablets: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects, and Important Advice | MediInsights
Rifaximin Tablets: Uses, Dosage, Mechanism, Side Effects, and Important Advice | MediInsights Side Effects 1 Views • 15 days ago

Welcome to MediInsights, your go-to channel for unlocking the wonders of wellness. In this video, we dive deep into everything you need to know about Rifaximin Tablets. From their uses and dosage to their mechanism of action, side effects, and important advice for using them effectively, we've got you covered.

Uses of Rifaximin Tablets:
Rifaximin Tablets are primarily used to treat traveler's diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli. They are also prescribed to reduce the risk of brain function decline in adults with liver failure, known as hepatic encephalopathy, and to manage irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). This locally acting antibiotic works within the gastrointestinal tract to target harmful bacteria and reduce symptoms.

Dosage of Rifaximin Tablets:
The dosage of Rifaximin varies based on the condition being treated. For traveler's diarrhea, the standard dose is 200 mg taken three times a day for three days. For hepatic encephalopathy, the typical dose is 550 mg taken twice a day. For IBS-D, the recommended dose is 550 mg taken three times a day for 14 days. Always follow your doctor's instructions and complete the full course of treatment to ensure the best results.

Mechanism of Action of Rifaximin Tablets:
Rifaximin works by binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis. This action suppresses bacterial growth within the intestines. Since Rifaximin is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream, it acts locally in the gut to reduce bacterial load, decrease toxin production, and alleviate inflammation, which helps relieve gastrointestinal symptoms.

Side Effects of Rifaximin Tablets:
Common side effects include nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and headaches. Some patients may experience swelling in the hands or feet, or a rash. Though rare, serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of the face or throat) can occur. If you experience any severe side effects, seek immediate medical attention.

Important Advice for Using Rifaximin Tablets:

Take Rifaximin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
It can be taken with or without food.
Maintain consistency in dosing times for effective drug levels.
Inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking to avoid potential drug interactions.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use Rifaximin only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.
Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Short-course rifaximin therapy for IBS-D - Video abstract [ID 167031]
Short-course rifaximin therapy for IBS-D - Video abstract [ID 167031] Side Effects 1 Views • 15 days ago

Video abstract of a review paper "Short-course therapy for diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome: understanding the mechanism, impact on gut microbiota, and safety and tolerability of rifaximin" published in the open access journal Clinical and Experimental Gastroenterology by Chang.

Abstract: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal (GI) disorder characterized by abdominal pain that occurs with defecation or alterations in bowel habits. Further classification is based on the predominant bowel habit: constipation-predominant IBS, diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D), or mixed IBS. The pathogenesis of IBS is unclear and is considered multifactorial in nature. GI dysbiosis, thought to play a role in IBS pathophysiology, has been observed in patients with IBS. Alterations in the gut microbiota are observed in patients with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and overgrowth may occur in a subset of patients with IBS. The management of IBS includes therapies targeting the putative factors involved in the pathogenesis of the condition. However, many of these interventions (eg, eluxadoline and alosetron) require long-term, daily administration and have important safety considerations. Agents thought to modulate the gut microbiota (eg, antibiotics and probiotics) have shown potential benefits in clinical studies. However, conventional antibiotics (eg, neomycin) are associated with several adverse events and/or the risk of bacterial antibiotic resistance, and probiotics lack uniformity in composition and consistency of response in patients. Rifaximin, a nonsystemic antibiotic administered as a 2-week course of therapy, has been shown to be safe and efficacious for the treatment of IBS-D. Rifaximin exhibits a favorable benefit-to-harm ratio when compared with daily therapies for IBS-D (eg, alosetron and tricyclic antidepressants), and rifaximin was not associated with the emergence of bacterial antibiotic resistance. Thus, short-course therapy with rifaximin is an appropriate treatment option for IBS-D.

Rifaximin side effects: A Gut Microbiome Game-Changer

Hey health enthusiasts! Are you fascinated by the complex world of our gut microbiome and the drugs that can tweak it? If so, let's dive into the fascinating antibiotic called rifaximin. This medication is a unique player in the antibiotic world, doing its magic mostly within the confines of our digestive tract. While it's a powerhouse against certain bacterial infections, like all medications, it does come with a few potential side effects we need to chat about.

Rifaximin: The Gut Specialist
Imagine your gut as a bustling city filled with trillions of microorganisms, both good and bad. Rifaximin is like a targeted cleanup crew, primarily eliminating harmful gut bacteria. Think of it tackling issues like traveler's diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), and hepatic encephalopathy (a brain condition caused by liver disease).

What makes rifaximin unique is its low absorption. Unlike many antibiotics that go on a full-body adventure, rifaximin primarily stays local within the gut. This means it has a focused effect on gut bacteria, minimizing the impact on the good bacteria residing in other parts of your body.

The Side Effect Story
Now, let's get real. While rifaximin is generally well-tolerated, it's crucial to be aware of the potential side effects that can pop up in some individuals:

Tummy Troubles: Nausea, stomach pain, and occasional bouts of diarrhea are the usual suspects. These are often mild and temporary, resolving as your body adjusts to the medication. Being a responsible health enthusiast, you know that staying hydrated and eating smaller meals throughout the day can help minimize digestive discomfort.

Fluid Overload: Sometimes, rifaximin can cause edema, which is a fancy term for swelling in your hands, feet, or ankles. This happens due to fluid buildup. Letting your doctor know if you notice swelling is important so they can monitor the situation.

Dizziness & Fatigue: For some, rifaximin might bring on feelings of dizziness or tiredness. It's a good idea to take it easy, especially when starting the medication, and see how your body responds.

Serious but Rare: In very rare cases, rifaximin may cause severe diarrhea due to an imbalance of gut bacteria (C. difficile infection). This requires immediate medical attention. Severe allergic reactions are also a rare but possible risk factor. Watch out for hives, rash, breathing difficulties, and any swelling, and get help right away!

Tips for a Smoother Ride
Here's how you can navigate potential rifaximin side effects like a pro:
Talk to Your Doc: Open communication with your doctor is key! Discuss your medical history and any existing conditions, as these can influence the likelihood of side effects.

The Timing is Everything: Follow your doctor's instructions on when and how to take rifaximin. Usually, it's taken with food to improve its absorption.

Probiotic Power: While more research is needed, some studies suggest that taking probiotics in conjunction with rifaximin might help maintain healthy gut flora and reduce side effects.

Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how you feel after starting rifaximin. If you experience any concerning symptoms, don't hesitate to contact your doctor.

The Takeaway
Rifaximin is a valuable tool in fighting various gut-related health issues. While side effects are possible, they're usually mild and manageable. By being informed, working with your doctor, and taking the right precautions, you can maximize the benefits of rifaximin while minimizing the risks.
