Zimbabwe is at risk of losing its youth to codeine cough syrup, as the addiction epidemic has already engulfed what the experts estimate could be over half the country’s young people. Despite the growing problem, Zimbabwe’s government has not yet opened rehabilitation clinics, meaning addicts are often sent to prison or psychiatric wards.
The cough syrup, often of the brand Broncleer, is imported illegally from South Africa, and is sold on every street corner, in bars, school yards and on busses for as little as $3 a bottle. We meet current and former users, as well as the NGOs pushing the government to open up rehabs, to find out why cough syrup has become the drug of choice for so many young Zimbabweans.
This documentary was produced with help from DanChurchAid.

Kirk Foat severely injured his hand while on vacation, so badly that when he returned to Canada, doctors feared they might have to amputate it. He underwent four surgeries to rebuild his hand, and was prescribed opioids to help with the pain.
But the opioids came with side effects, and eventually, for Kirk, didn't block his pain as well anymore. He decided to wean himself off the pills, once and for all. He shared the challenges of his experience with Dr. Brian Goldman on White Coat, Black Art.

When codeine is used for a long time, it may become habit-forming, causing mental or physical dependence. However, people who have continuing pain should not let the fear of dependence keep them from using narcotics to relieve their pain. Physical dependence may lead to withdrawal side effects if treatment is stopped suddenly.

Codeine Withdrawal Addiction and Treatment - Click here for more information:
https://anrclinic.com/codeine-withdrawal-detox/
Codeine is an opiate used to treat pain, coughing, and diarrhea. It is typically used to treat mild to moderate degrees of pain. Greater benefit may occur when combined with paracetamol or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
People may develop an addiction to codeine after continued use and/or abuse of the drug. Codeine users often get a false sense of security because codeine is not considered as powerful or addictive as other opiate family members such as heroin.
Some signs of codeine abuse include:
• Drowsiness
• Slurred speech
• Short attention span
• Impaired judgment
• Dilated pupils
• Lack of coordination
• Apathetic behavior
Long term signs of codeine abuse include:
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Fatigue
• Impaired memory
• Liver damage
• Kidney damage
• Muscle spasms
• Death
• Codeine withdrawal symptoms
Codeine withdrawal symptoms are very similar to the symptoms of withdrawal of other opiates such as morphine. Codeine withdrawal symptoms are usually not life-threatening, making some people try to quit cold-turkey. Unfortunately, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms often lead to relapse.
Codeine withdrawal symptoms vary from person to person, as does the severity and duration of the process of withdrawal.
Accelerated Neuro-Regulation or ANR treatment offers radically different results. The entire procedure lasts four to five hours, requiring a patient to stay in a specialized hospital for about 30 hours. There is no danger of relapse since the procedure treats the root causes of addiction on the physical, biological level.
The ANR treatment is based on advanced scientific research and medical advancements, as well as 30 years of clinical work of Doctor Andre Waismann. It is Dr. Waismann who identified the biological and physical roots of opioid dependency in the ’90s. During his illustrious career, Dr. Waismann has given numerous lectures and educated health professionals all over the world. The success of Dr. Waismann’s ANR treatment is directly related to the ability to evaluate the balance of endorphin-receptors in each patient and being able to bring each individual to his or her optimal chemical balance.
ANR is the only treatment in the world that addresses the root of opioid addiction.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Waismann identified the biological roots of opioid dependency; since then, he has successfully treated more than 24,000 patients worldwide that are struggling with opioid addiction.
Throughout his career, he has lectured and educated health professionals in dozens of countries around the world to this day.

Codeine or 3-methylmorphine is an opiate used to treat pain, as a cough medicine, and for diarrhea. It is often sold as a salt in the form of either codeine sulfate or codeine phosphate in the United States and Australia; codeine hydrochloride is more common worldwide and the citrate, hydroiodide, hydrobromide, tartrate, and other salts are also seen. Codeine is the second-most predominant alkaloid in opium, at up to three percent. Although codeine can be extracted from natural sources, a semi-synthetic process is the primary source of codeine for pharmaceutical use. It is considered the prototype of the weak to midrange opioids. In 2013 about 361,000 kilograms of codeine were produced while 249,000 kilograms were used. It is the most commonly taken opiate. It is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, a list of the most important medication needed in a basic health system.
Formula: C18H21NO3
Other names: 3-Methylmorphine
Onset of action: 15–30 minutes
Elimination half-life: 2.5–3 hours
Duration of action: 4–6 hours
Addiction liability: High

One in four adults in England take sleeping tablets, anti-depressants or painkillers for far longer than they should - and the struggle to get off them can seem impossible.
Health chiefs say that although GPs need to stop handing them out, sometimes they are left with little choice.

A narcotic that’s typically used to reduce coughing and relieve mild forms of pain. However, it’s easy to fall into a viscous cycle of addiction to the drug, and getting out of it can be tough. People trapped in the cycle typically suffer from some seriously unpleasant side effects.
These include drowsiness, lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting…and that’s just the tip of the addictive iceberg. Some even experiences stomach pain, excessive sweating, constipation, flushing, itching…and rashes.
These side effects are usually worsened when the drug is mixed with alcohol or other medications. Even HERBAL supplements can fuse with Codeine to create a potentially lethal combination.
Yes, the reality of Codeine addiction (and its side-effects) are frightening. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If you or anyone you know is ready to escape this prison, get in touch with Blvd Treatment Centers today. Help is always just a phone call away. Lean is a slang term for cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine, an antihistamine. It’s mixed with soft drinks and or candy to add to the flavor, and it’s used as a party drug. Purple drank, sizzurp, and Texas Tea are all slang terms for it. Although codeine isn’t one of the stronger opioids like fentanyl, codeine abuse can destroy your life almost as easily. Also, high doses of promethazine can cause serious organ damage.
Lean has killed people, too. Rapper Pimp C from Underground Kingz (UGK) died in part due to drinking lean.
Fortunately, lean abuse is treatable. The Edge Treatment Center uses evidence-based treatment to help people leave opioids like codeine behind, permanently. Don’t risk an overdose from lean! Reach out to The Edge Treatment Center today at 844-991-1772. We’ll help you leave lean behind, and start a new life.
