Sumatriptan is a medication commonly used to treat migraines and cluster headaches. Rigmor Hojland Jensen, MD, from University of Copenhagen, Glostrup, Denmark, discusses the new clinical guidelines for cluster headache treatment and the difficulties associated with their development. The new European Academy of Neurology guidelines on the treatment of cluster headache, published in October 2023, are based on existing evidence gathered over the last 20 years of research, although this is still a field of research that needs significant development. Primary recommendations for acute cluster headache treatment are the use of 100% oxygen with a flow of at least 12 L/min over 15 min and 6mg subcutaneous sumatriptan or intranasal zolmitriptan. The use of oral agents as treatments for acute cluster headache has proved ineffective due to slow uptake being impractical for the short-lasting attacks. Verapamil is recommended as a preventive treatment in cluster headache, based on strong efficacy evidence. Corticosteroids can be used as a transitional therapy or an additive while waiting for verapamil to take effect. The use of corticosteroids in chronic cluster headache is limited by the development of severe side effects.

We are lucky to live in a time with modern medications to treat, control, and even cure diseases or injuries. But risks come with pharmaceuticals in the form of side effects. Side effects vary from medication to medication and person to person. They can be mild like a headache or extreme like a stroke. Some side effects show up immediately and others may not manifest themselves for months or even years.

If you are a veteran who is experiencing adverse symptoms caused by medications taken to address a service-connected injury or illness, you may be eligible for additional VA disability compensation for a secondary service-connected condition. All too often, veterans applying for disability benefits overlook secondary disabilities and miss out on much-needed benefits they are entitled to.

A secondary service-connected condition is when an established medical condition that was either caused or aggravated by an incident or event during a person’s time in the military leads to a new and separate condition.

To be granted secondary-service connected benefits, you must clearly establish a link between your primary service-connected condition and your secondary condition to be granted additional disability benefits. This link is known as the nexus. Your private doctor or VA doctor will need to provide the VA with a nexus letter which is a medical opinion linking your secondary condition to your already service-connected disability. Any medical records that support a connection between those conditions are also worth submitting to the VA. The nexus between your primary condition and secondary condition must be clearly established in order to be granted service-connection on a secondary basis.


Service-connected disabilities number in the thousands and many of them are treated with both prescription and over-the-counter medications. Here are a few examples of medications that lead to secondary VA claims for adverse side effects. Antibiotics can cause kidney damage. The many different medications prescribed to treat PTSD can cause side effects that can be just as incapacitating as PTSD itself. Anxiety and cardiovascular issues are just two of the many secondary conditions that can be caused by these meds. If you developed high blood pressure during your time in service, you may have been prescribed blood pressure medication which can cause side effects like headaches or digestive issues.

The VA rates secondary disabilities the same way it rates primary disabilities using the VA’s Schedule for Rating Disabilities. The rating for your secondary disability will be determined by the VA based on the medical evidence you provide and, in some cases, by the results of a Compensation and Pension Exam and then combined with the rating for your primary disability.

What is Imitrex and how does it work?.

Understanding migraines and their symptoms.
Migraines are severe headaches characterized by intense, throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. They can last for hours or even days, significantly impacting the sufferer's quality of life. In addition to the excruciating pain, migraines are often accompanied by other symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances.
The exact cause of migraines is not fully understood, but they are believed to be influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Certain triggers, such as stress, hormonal changes, certain foods or drinks, lack of sleep, and sensory stimuli, can precipitate migraine attacks in susceptible individuals. Understanding your individual triggers can be helpful in managing and preventing migraine episodes.
Migraines can be classified into two main types:. migraines with aura and migraines without aura. Aura refers to a set of symptoms that precede or accompany a migraine attack, typically involving visual disturbances, such as flashing lights or zigzag lines. Not all migraine sufferers experience aura, and the absence of aura does not make the migraine any less severe.

Sumatriptan also known as Triptans. It is a selective agonist of serotonin receptor also known as 5 hydroxy tryptamine 1B and 1D receptor located in cranial blood vessels.
It is sold under the brand names, Sumitrex, Sumitop so on. During migraine, Trigeminal nerve becomes activated this results in the release of neuropeptides from Cranial nerve 5. Neuropeptides cause painful neurogenic inflammation in the meningeal vascular causing vasodilation and activation of nociceptors, all of which contributes to the migraine. Clinically, Sumatriptan is used for treating acute migraine attack. Overdosing of Sumatriptan results in Sulfhaemoglobinaemia that makes our blood appear dark green.

Migraine is a condition which is related to vascular disorder of the blood vessels in the brain. It can experience excruciating hemicranial headaches associated with nausea, vomiting and photophobia, which is a discomfort on seeing lights. So they need to be treated again with a combination of drugs which are used to heal acute attacks and also drugs to prevent recurrent attacks. The drugs that are used to treat acute attacks are usually the 5 HT antagonists like sumatriptan, along with that we give a combination of analgesics, anti-nausea drugs, which is a combination domperidone and naproxen, which is the commonest combination that we use. But using this drug immediately reduces the intensity of the headache in half an hour period. In case the patients continue to have pain, there is no harm in taking a repeat dose of drug within 24 hours, a second dosage can be attempted. But at no given point of time, you need to repeat more than 2 drugs in a 24 hour interval. These are the treatment of acute attacks. In terms of preventing the attacks on a regular basis, we use a various drugs and the neurologist and the treating physician would help you to understand the limitation of these drugs, the usage of these drugs and the effects and the side effects of these drugs. So please consult your physician or neurologist for continuous headaches which are frequent, needs to be evaluated further with imaging studies.

Sumatriptan tablets is an anti-migraine drug. Causes narrowing of the vessels of the carotid arterial bed, which supply blood to the extracranial and intracranial tissues (expansion of the vessels of the meninges and / or their edema is the main mechanism for the development of migraine in humans), without having a significant effect on cerebral blood flow.
