What is Botox?

Botox injection is a prescription medicine that helps improve the appearance of facial wrinkles, and treats some medical conditions, by causing muscles to relax, as botox blocks nerve signals to the muscles.

Botox Cosmetic and Botox injections are both FDA-approved medicines, Botox Cosmetic is used to soften facial wrinkles, and Botox injections are used to treat medical conditions like chronic migraines, specific bladder issues, excessive sweating, and other muscle-related medical conditions.

The difference between Botox and Botox Cosmetic is they are different strengths once the vial has been made up, and they have different FDA-approved uses. Therefore they should not be used interchangeably.

Botox and Botox Cosmetic contain onabotulinumtoxinA, which is one of the botulinum toxins from the class of medicines called neurotoxins.

Other botulinum toxins FDA approved medicines are abobotulinumtoxina (Dysport), incobotulinumtoxina (Xeomin), daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm (Daxxify), prabotulinumtoxina (Jeuveau) and rimabotulinumtoxinb (Myobloc).

What are Botox Cosmetic and Botox used for?

Botox Cosmetic is used for:

Facial wrinkles. Botox Cosmetic is used (FDA approved) to help smooth facial wrinkles, specifically moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet lines (wrinkles near the outer corner of the eye), and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.

Botox is used for:

Chronic Migraine. Botox is used to prevent chronic migraines in adult patients who have 15 or more headaches a month that last for 4 hours a day or longer. For migraines, botox can be injected into seven specific areas of the head and neck muscles. Results usually last up to 12 weeks, depending on the individual patient. Botox has not been established as safe or effective for the prevention of episodic migraine (14 headache days or fewer per month) in seven placebo-controlled studies.
Cervical dystonia. Botox is used in patients 16 years and older to treat cervical dystonia, which is a condition that causes your neck muscles to contract abnormally. This makes your neck twist and causes your head to tilt to one side, forward, or backward.
Muscle stiffness: Botox is also used to treat muscle stiffness (spasticity) of the arms, hands, legs, and feet in adults and children who are at least 2 years old. Spasticity is when there is an abnormal increase in muscle tone or stiffness of muscle, which can cause problems with movement and speech, or can cause discomfort or pain.
Eye muscle conditions. Botox is used to treat specific eye muscle conditions caused by nerve disorders in adults and children who are at least 12 years old. This includes uncontrolled blinking or spasm of the eyelids (benign essential blepharospasm), and a condition in which the eyes do not point in the same direction (strabismus).
Bladder issues. Botox is used in adults to treat overactive bladder and urinary incontinence (urine leakage) that has not been helped by other medication. Botox may be used to treat incontinence caused by nerve disorders such as spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis. Botox is also used to treat the neurologic condition neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) in pediatric patients 5 years of age and older. Botox is only used for bladder issues when patients have an inadequate response or are intolerant to an anticholinergic medication.
Excessive sweating. Botox is also used to treat severe underarm sweating (primary axillary hyperhidrosis) in adults.

How is Botox given?

Botox injections should be given only by a trained medical professional, which includes when used for cosmetic purposes.

This medicine is injected into a muscle by a healthcare provider. How often you have Botox injections depends on the condition being treated, Botox Cosmetic injections for temporary improvement in the appearance of facial lines should be spaced at least 3 months apart, and for treatment for other conditions, it may be up to at least 12 weeks between injections.

The effects of a Botox injection are temporary and your symptoms may return completely within 3 months. After repeat injections, it may take less and less time between injections before your symptoms return, especially if your body develops antibodies to the botulinum toxin.

You should not seek to have botulinum toxin injections from more than one medical professional at a time. If you do switch healthcare providers, it is important to tell your new provider how long it has been since your last botulinum toxin injection.

Using this medication more often than prescribed will not make it more effective and may result in serious side effects.

Botox Side Effects
Botox Side Effects Side Effects 0 Views • 4 months ago

http://www.austinwholebodyhealth.com

If you are considering trying Botox injections watch this video to learn some of the most commonly reported side effects from Botox injections. You will also be given some reliable online sources to research before deciding to try Botox.

Moira McCarthy: Hi, I'm Moira McCarthy of Whole Body Health for this segment of Ask The Acupuncturist. Many people have asked me how BOTOX and what some of the side effects are from BOTOX. I went online and did some research, and I found this site through the National Institutes of Health called MedlinePlus. I'm just going to read their definition of what BOTOX is.
BOTOX is a drug made from the toxin botulinum. It's the same toxin that causes life-threatening food poisoning called botulism. Doctors use this toxin in very small doses to treat various health conditions, including temporarily smoothing different wrinkles on the skin. BOTOX injections work by weakening or paralyzing the muscles in the face, thereby smoothing out the wrinkles. The effects last from three to five months by the statistics I could look up.
Most of the commonly reported side effects include pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. You can also get flu-like symptoms, nausea, headaches, upset stomach. Injections of the face may also cause temporary drooping of the eyelids, double or blurred vision, and swelling of the eyelids or dry eyes.
I had a client relay to me that she had go into get a facial and they were running a BOTOX special. She really wasn't that interested but the gal kind of talked her into go ahead and trying it. Something went wrong. She told me that either they did the injections too deep in the forehead or they used too much, but her forehead dropped and her eyebrows went together. She said she looked like Frankenstein. She was mortified.
Another side effect that I found was you could have allergic reactions to the BOTOX. That includes itching, red rash, red welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, dizziness, and fainting. They say on the official BOTOX Cosmetic website, if you have the latter, either dizziness, fainting, or shortness of breath, this could be serious, and to call your doctor right away or seek medical attention.
Here at Whole Body Health we offer a drug-free alternative to BOTOX. We call it the Acu-Lift. We use very fine little acupuncture needles that we place in various areas of the face concerned. What it does is it triggers a healing reaction, which stimulates elastin and collagen. It also brings blood and oxygen to the skin. What that does is it reduces fine lines, minimizes the lines. It gives the skin a nice kind of youthful glow. It also gives a little lift to the eye, cheek, and jaw line. You get the entire face. You also get the additional benefits of acupuncture, which is balancing the body to obtain optimal wellness.
We also have a needle-free alternative called the Jade Microcurrent Facial. It does a lot of the same benefits as the Acu-Lift. They effects, again, last three to five years vs. three to five months. If you're interested you can give us a call today to find out more. If you mention BOTOX side affects you will get 20% off your first treatment. Give us a call today at 512-328-5200.

Summary:
1. Minor Side Effects
The good thing about botox injections is they are considered one of the safest cosmetic and corrective procedures. The majority of side effects caused by botox injections are temporary. They fade away within days, or last just as long as the botox treatment itself, which is three to six months.

2. Dry Eyes And Droopy Eyelids
Experts claim that when botox is injected around the Orbicularis muscle, it can cause dry eyes. Orbicularis muscles are responsible for the opening and closing of the eyelids. Due to the inability to close eyelids completely, you may experience dry eyes.

3. Excessive Tearing
While botox is a common corrective procedure for people with teary eyes, it can have the opposite effect as well. Botox injections might spread a little beyond the injection site. For this reason, a small, highly concentrated botox dose may be used when working near the eyes. Large diluted doses have a higher risk of spreading.

4. Uneven Eyebrows
These are among the most hated of side effects. After all, who wants to wear a surprised expression every waking minute? I would hate it too if I end up looking like Cruella from 101 Dalmations after a botched botox procedure.

What are the side effects of Botulinum toxin?- Dr. Rajdeep Mysore
What are the side effects of Botulinum toxin?- Dr. Rajdeep Mysore Side Effects 0 Views • 4 months ago

Food poisoning is caused by a bacteria called clostridium botulinum. It is one of the bacteria that can cause food poisoning. This bacteria produces a toxin that paralyses the muscles. So this toxin is called as botulinum toxin. The first company that made it is called botox and this was used to treat squint. So children with squint were treated by ophthalmologists using botox and they noticed that when they treated slightly older people with wrinkles with squint, they noticed that it also improved the wrinkles, which was a side effect. Later botox became much more popular as a cosmetic treatment to treat wrinkles and to give a glow to the skin. There are lot of application of botox other than antiageing , we use it to treat sweating, cerebral palsy and so many other disorders. Since botox is used for treatment as a very low dose, it has almost no side effects. The only side effects that can be expected with botox are botox toxins spreads to areas which it is not used to spread to. For example if we treat for the brow and if it spreads to the eyelid muscles, then the person cannot open their eyelids. So drooping of eyelids is the most commonest side effect, it is reversible also as botox gets degraded naturally in the body. Even if drooping occurs, it gets resolved. Even if drooping occurs, the effects last or about 3 to 6 weeks and the effect of botox on other muscles last for 6 to 9 months.

Let’s talk about botox—is it safe? Botox is an injection of a deadly bacteria called botulinum. This bacteria is a neurotoxin. In fact, it’s one of the most poisonous toxins known. Just 1 gram of this stuff could kill 1 million people.

Botox blocks the nerves that go to the muscle that’s injected. You’re no longer going to contract that muscle.

Botox is considered safe, but from 1989-2003 the FDA reported:
• 1437 adverse events
• 217 serious effects
• 28 deaths

Botox is given in very small amounts in certain parts of the body. You would want to make sure that the person injecting it is extremely competent with a lot of experience.
