Alpha blockers are a type of blood pressure medication. They lower blood pressure by preventing a hormone called norepinephrine from tightening the muscles in the walls of smaller arteries and veins. As a result, the blood vessels remain open and relaxed. This improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure
Because alpha blockers also relax other muscles throughout the body, these medications also can help improve urine flow in older men with prostate problems.

Examples of alpha blockers
Alpha blockers are either short-acting or long-acting. Short-acting medications work quickly, but their effects last only a few hours. Long-acting medications take longer to work, but their effects last longer. The alpha blocker that's best for you depends on your health and the condition being treated.

Alpha blockers are also called alpha-adrenergic blocking agents, alpha-adrenergic antagonists, adrenergic blocking agents and alpha-blocking agents.

Examples of alpha blockers used to treat high blood pressure include:

When alpha blockers are used
Alpha blockers typically aren't the first treatment option for high blood pressure. Instead, they're used in combination with other drugs, such as diuretics, when high blood pressure is difficult to control.

In addition to high blood pressure, doctors prescribe alpha blockers to prevent, treat or improve symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia).

Side effects
When you start taking an alpha blocker, you might develop low blood pressure and dizziness, which can make you faint when you rise from a sitting or lying position. As a result, the first dose is often taken at bedtime.

Because of this effect on the brain, prazosin has been found to be effective in treating certain mental health conditions. In particular, it has been shown to be helpful for people with PTSD who experience nightmares or flashbacks. It has also been used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.
How does Prazosin work?.
Prazosin works by blocking alpha receptors in the brain. Alpha receptors are a type of receptor that are involved in the fight-or-flight response. When we're in a stressful or dangerous situation, our bodies release adrenaline, which activates the fight-or-flight response. This response causes our heart rate to increase, our breathing to become more rapid, and our blood vessels to constrict.
When alpha receptors are blocked, the fight-or-flight response is dampened. This can lead to a decrease in symptoms such as anxiety, panic, and nightmares. It's important to note, however, that prazosin does not eliminate the fight-or-flight response entirely. Rather, it helps to regulate it, so that it's not as extreme.
Benefits of Prazosin for different conditions.
PTSD.
Prazosin has been found to be particularly helpful for people with PTSD who experience nightmares or flashbacks. Several studies have shown that prazosin can reduce the frequency and severity of nightmares in people with PTSD. It has also been shown to improve overall sleep quality in this population.
In addition to its effects on sleep, prazosin has also been found to be effective in reducing other symptoms of PTSD, such as hyperarousal and avoidance. One study found that prazosin was more effective than placebo in reducing overall PTSD symptoms.
Anxiety and Panic Disorders.

Prazosin is a unique medication because it’s most known as an anti-hypertension medication to bring down the blood pressure. But it is helpful to stop nightmares especially in cases of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It can drop the blood pressure so it’s important to be careful after taking this at night, and getting up at night to use the bathroom or do a task - to make sure you do not feel dizzy or lightheaded after getting up that could be a sign the medication has dropped the blood pressure too much.

The dosing is in 1, 2, or 5mg increments. It should be used carefully when someone is on blood pressure medications because the two together can drop the blood pressure. Because of that effect, what one can do is measure their blood pressure before taking the medications, and if it’s less than 90/60 or the heart rate is less than 60, to not take the medication.

Some reports are also that it can help with other Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms. This makes sense because the nightmares or scary dreams can not only affect one’s sleep, but also one’s thoughts and moods the next day. So when people who take this medication have less recollection of their nightmares, it’s likely their thoughts and moods will be better as well.

Prazosin blocks the alpha receptors in the body and these receptors most often respond to adrenaline or norepinephrine. So in a way it could be slowing down or stopping that adrenaline response that people who are in fight or flight mode in cases of anxiety or Post Traumatic Stress may experience. It could be in the form of nightmares at night, but maybe someone is having vivid dreams or wakes up scared or sweating - this could also help in that case.

Some other side effects include a sustained erection, dizziness, headaches, feeling like one’s heart races fast, trouble breathing or increased fluid in various tissues around the body.
