A selective α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist (blocker) and inverse agonist.
It binds to and inhibits type 1 alpha-adrenergic receptors and thus inhibits smooth muscle contraction, lowering blood pressure.
It is taken by mouth.

(Indications)
• hypertension: It dilates blood vessels. (It is a less preferred treatment of high blood pressure.)
• symptoms of an benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate): It relaxes the outflow of the bladder.
• nightmares related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): The mechanism is not entirely clear.
• heart failure
• Raynaud syndrome
• erectile dysfunction

(Side effects and complications)
• Lack of energy, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, headache
• Nasal congestion
• Heart palpitations
• First dose effect
• Orthostatic hypotension: Low blood pressure with standing.
• Depression
• Priapism: Prolonged erections.
• Intraoperative floppy iris syndrome: Poor preoperative pupil dilation together with progressive intraoperative pupil constriction, billowing of a flaccid iris stroma, and iris prolapse to the surgical incisions.
