Keppra Side Effects
Keppra tablets, oral solution and injection all contain the active ingredient levetiracetam, which is a medicine used to treat epilepsy. It works by stabilising electrical activity in the brain.
In people with epilepsy, there is excessive electrical activity in the brain; This leads to unusually rapid and repetitive electrical signals to be released in the brain, causing fits and seizures.
It is not fully understood how levetiracetam works to control seizures, but its mechanism appears to be different from other antiepileptic medicines.
Levetiracetam may be used on its own, or as an additional treatment, if other antiepileptic medicines have failed to fully control the epileptic seizures.

Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health.
It happens when there is an overproduction of electrical activity in the brain. “Seizures can occur for many different reasons, sometimes from metabolic problems, or even medications could cause a seizure on an isolated basis, or even toxic chemicals could cause a seizure,” explained Dr. John Sullivan, a neurologist on the medical staff of Lee Health.
But if a patient has a seizure, it doesn’t mean they have epilepsy. “Epilepsy is defined as having multiple unprovoked seizures,” he said.
There are many different types of seizures, just like there are many different types of epilepsy. To determine the difference and the cause, patients may undergo a series of testing including an MRI and EEG screening. “The EEG is particularly helpful to see electrically where in the brain the seizure could be coming from,” said Dr. Sullivan.
A physical examination, a detailed medical history, and diagnostic testing can help physicians diagnose and treat the problem. “They are treated differently. Commonly, if we find there is a provoking occurrence, simply removing the provoking occurrence is enough to cause the seizures to go away, or if we need to use medication if it truly is an epilepsy syndrome,” said Dr. Sullivan.
Approximately 3 and a half million people in the U.S. have epilepsy; whereas, studies show one in 10 people may develop a seizure in life. “Folks who do have epilepsy, true epilepsy, the risks of reoccurrence of seizures can be quite high. Most all of those patients do require medical care and medication to try to control those seizures,” Dr. Sullivan said.
Surgery may also be an option for patients. If a person experiences a seizure, it’s important they seek medical care to determine the cause.

Levetiracetam's side effects can be dangerous. This video explores Levetiracetam drug facts, use consequences, and interactions.
🚨 Important Information: Mixing Keppra and Alcohol 🚨
🔍 Understanding the Risks:
Taking Keppra (levetiracetam) and alcohol together poses serious risks, and it's crucial to be informed about potential interactions and consequences. This article sheds light on the dangers associated with combining these substances.
👉 Key Points:
Increased Side Effects: Combining Keppra with alcohol heightens the risk of side effects, including dizziness, drowsiness, stomach pain, blurred vision, and changes in mood or behavior.
Seizure Threat: Drinking heavily while on Keppra can elevate the risk of seizures, making it imperative to avoid alcohol consumption.
Keppra and Alcohol Death: Although rare, deaths linked to the combination of Keppra and alcohol have been reported. Immediate medical attention is crucial if someone experiences symptoms of an overdose.
Understanding Keppra: Keppra is an antiepileptic drug used to control partial-onset seizures. It affects the nervous system and should be taken with caution, especially when considering alcohol consumption.
Depression and Side Effects: Keppra may lead to depression, aggression, anxiety, and coordination difficulties. It can also cause drowsiness, affecting activities like driving. Monitoring mood changes is essential.
Pregnancy Warning: Pregnant individuals on Keppra must continue using it unless otherwise advised by a physician, as having a seizure during pregnancy can pose severe risks to the baby.
Side Effects of Mixing Alcohol & Keppra: Beyond the risks associated with mixing Keppra and alcohol, potential side effects include bruising, fatigue, tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, and skin reactions.
🕰️ How Long Does Keppra Stay in Your System?
Understanding the duration of Keppra's effects is crucial. It typically takes 1-2 hours to take effect, with an elimination half-life of approximately 44 hours. Factors such as metabolism, age, health, weight, and dosage frequency influence the clearance rate.
🤔 Can You Overdose on Keppra?
Keppra overdose is possible, leading to symptoms like drowsiness, aggression, fainting, shallow breathing, and weakness. Recovery is rapid with supportive care, but exceeding 3000 mg per day poses serious risks.
💊 Treatment for Keppra Abuse:
Weaning off Keppra should be done under a doctor's guidance, avoiding sudden discontinuation. The detox process varies based on individual factors, and seeking professional help in a treatment facility or detox center is recommended for a safe and effective recovery.

Today’s video is all about epilepsy anticonvulsant drugs for Nursing Students and NCLEX Review.
Anticonvulsant drugs are used to treat seizures (from epilepsy), which are sudden abnormal electrical discharges from nerve cells in the brain. These drugs help prevent brain seizures by blocking the spread of neuronal activity that causes them.
The most common anticonvulsant drugs include Levetiracetam and Phenytoin – and both have different interactions and required nursing interventions.

Keppra or levetiracetam is one of the biggest medications used to control epilepsy. Its one of the newer ones that came out. It's available by pill or intravenously. It works on what's called an SP2 receptor. So its different than some of the other anti-epileptics and its good for both partial complex seizures as well as generalized tonic-clonic seizures. It's usually very well tolerated. It also comes in a liquid formulation which is great for kids. It can be iv loaded which means if somebody's having a seizure in the emergency room or in the hospital it can be given intravenously to stop the seizure. The biggest side effects are, it makes some people, kinda irritable and nasty. And we deal with that by giving them a B6 vitamin at the same time that we start the keppra. Sometimes you can get a little bit of somnamolism and a little bit of somnambulism being sleepy. But the nice part is it doesn't interact with other drugs. So it has very little drugs to drug interaction. No liver issues, no other blood toxicities. So it's a clean medication, treats multiple seizure types. You don't need to monitor blood levels and it's actually safe in pregnancy, which is another big plus. And it doesn't interfere with oral contraceptives.
Dr Pramod Krishnan, a neurologist near Marathalli at Manipal Hospital tell us about the safety and effectiveness of epilepsy medicine.
There are many epilepsy medications (also known as antiepileptic drugs) available nowadays. There are many factors one must take into account before choosing medication, including age, gender, type of seizure, and others. The medicines are designed to be used over the long-term and the side effects are generally mild and can be predicted.
