Qelbree (Viloxazine) is a newer ADHD treatment. It is not controlled like adderall, ritalin and similar medications, and has less potential for abuse, dependence, tolerance and withdrawal. It is taken once daily and lasts 24 hours. Unlike most stimulants, it takes 6 weeks to get the full effect (so it doesn't have the more "immediate" effect that adderall or similar medications have, which is one factor that decreases abuse potential. It is a capsule and it can be opened and sprinkled onto apple sauce or into water, if individuals do not want to swallow a pill. It's a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (like strattera or attomoxetine). Typical doses are 400 - 600 mg (with patients generally starting at 200 mg). Common side effects include insomnia, tiredness, headache, dry mouth and GI difficulties, but these side effects tend not to be problematic in most individuals taking it (some studies show only a 5% discontinuation rate due to side effects). It can increase heart rate and blood pressure, and so it is very important that patient have their vitals checked regularly (at psychiatric visits or with regular primary care appointments). Do not start, stop or change doses of this medication without speaking directly with your provider.
Dr. Pagnani is the Medical Director of Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates in Philadelphia, PA and surrounding areas. Their practice has 25 Academically oriented provides and is now scheduling in-office and telemedicine visits.

ADHD can be treated by a variety of medications, and the two most common drug classes used for treatment are stimulants and nonstimulants. The main difference between the two is that stimulants stimulate the Central Nervous System (CNS), and nonstimulants do not. Once stimulated, the CNS releases dopamine and adrenaline, prompting multiple reactions in the body, such as increased focus and a faster heart rate.
This video describes the differences between the two drug classes, gives popular examples of each (ie adderall and vyvanse as stimulants and wellbutrin and strattera as a nonstimulants) and describes the differences between the drugs with regard to their chemicals and compounds. But don't worry - I keep it fast-paced and upbeat, with a bit of humor sprinkled in.
I also answer a few popular questions, such as:
"Why do some medications work well for me, while others don't?"
"Is there a way to find out if a certain drug will work better for me?"
"What's the deal with citric and ascorbic acid (vitamin c)?"
"Should I eat before I take my medication?"
"How often should I take my medication?"

Atomoxetine can cause a few significant side effects when used for treating ADHD.
It can cause an increase in heart rate leading to palpitations and chest pain. It can also elevate blood pressure. Due to its adverse effects, this medication is not recommended in a few conditions. Liver injury is also reported with use of atomoxetine.

As much as my meds help me, it’s a battle to remember to do all the things I need to do to be able to take them: sign up for health insurance, pay my bill, make a doctor appointment, GO to that appointment, get my prescription, find a pharmacy that can fill it, remember to pick it up before it closes, remember to bring my ID so they’ll let me...
So when I miss a step and find myself without my meds, it’s easy to wonder...are they really necessary?
This is what happened when I forgot to pay my health insurance, stopped taking my medication for two weeks and tried to learn how to live without it.
Please share -- because the stigma is real, and no one should have to feel ashamed for getting the treatment they need just because their disorder is mental rather than physical, invisible rather than obvious.
Mental health is just as important as physical health, and it’s time we acknowledge that.
*NOTE* -- I do not recommend going off medication without a doctor's supervision. A medical professional should be accessible to troubleshoot problems. If you can't reach your doctor, talk to a pharmacist.

The FDA approved Strattera (atomoxetine) two decades ago as the first non-stimulant for the treatment of ADHD. Although designed with the hope of being an effective antidepressant, it had more clearcut results for ADHD. But from the beginning, many, many people haven’t responded well to the medication. It seems to take a long time to work, and lots of people have troubling side effects. And that’s not just in comparison to stimulants. A recent head to head comparison with another non-stimulant for ADHD, Qelbree (viloxazine) found that Strattera was less effective, had more side effects, and took longer to provide benefits.
If Strattera is working for you, great, keep taking it. But if your response is mediocre or worse, there are several other non-stimulants that might help you more, including Qelbree, Wellbutrin, guanfacine, and even Cymbalta (duloxetine).

My experience using Strattera (Atomoxetine) for treating ADHD.
Classified as an 'SNRI' (Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor) drug, this non-stimulant medication is an alternative option to consider. As with all medications, there's potentially good results and potentially bad side effects. Don't let any negative aspects of this video put you off Strattera, as everyone responds differently. Only when you try it out for yourself will you know if it's right for you. If you're interested in giving Strattera a trial run, you should consult a psychiatrist.
