Otezla is from a class of medications called PDE4 inhibitors. These medications work by blocking the phosphodiesterase type 4 enzyme, which causes an increase in the level of cyclic adenosine monophosphate, a messenger involved in cell signaling in our bodies.

Otezla is not a biologic agent.

When starting this medicine, the dose is slowly increased over several days until you reach the maintenance dose, which is usually one tablet twice a day.

The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, headache, or cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, and sore throat, which occur in 5 % or more of patients.

Skyrizi: Debunking Common Misconceptions and Exploring Potential Side Effects
Skyrizi: Debunking Common Misconceptions and Exploring Potential Side Effects Side Effects 1 Views • 4 months ago

In the realm of medical advancements, Skyrizi has emerged as a notable medication for the treatment of psoriasis. However, like any medication, it has been subject to various misconceptions and concerns. This article aims to shed light on Skyrizi, debunk common misconceptions surrounding it, and provide an in-depth exploration of its potential side effects.

1. Understanding Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition characterized by the rapid buildup of skin cells, resulting in red, itchy, and scaly patches on the skin. It is an autoimmune disease with various triggers and manifestations.

2. Introduction to Skyrizi
Skyrizi, known by its generic name risankizumab, is a biologic medication used to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs called interleukin inhibitors, specifically targeting interleukin-23 (IL-23), a cytokine involved in the immune response.

3. Common Misconceptions
Misconception 1: Skyrizi Cures Psoriasis Permanently
While Skyrizi is highly effective in managing psoriasis and can lead to significant improvement or even complete clearance of symptoms, it is not a permanent cure. Psoriasis can have periods of remission and flare-ups, and ongoing treatment may be necessary to maintain control.

Misconception 2: Skyrizi Is Unsafe Due to Being a Biologic Medication
Biologic medications like Skyrizi are thoroughly tested and approved by regulatory agencies for safety and efficacy. Their targeted approach to treating psoriasis often results in fewer side effects compared to traditional systemic treatments.

4. Exploring Potential Side Effects
While Skyrizi is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, like any medication, it can have potential side effects. It's important to note that not everyone will experience these, and the benefits of the treatment usually outweigh the risks. Some potential side effects include:

Upper Respiratory Infections: Common symptoms may include a sore throat, stuffy or runny nose, and sinus congestion.
Fatigue: Some individuals may experience increased tiredness or lack of energy.
Injection Site Reactions: Redness, pain, or swelling at the injection site can occur.
5. Managing and Minimizing Risks
To manage potential side effects and minimize risks, it's essential to follow the prescribed dosage and administration instructions precisely. Regular communication with a healthcare provider and reporting any unusual symptoms promptly can help ensure a safe and effective treatment experience.

6. Conclusion: Skyrizi - A Step Toward Psoriasis Management
Skyrizi has proven to be a significant advancement in the treatment of psoriasis, providing relief to many individuals suffering from this chronic skin condition. By understanding the truth about Skyrizi, debunking common misconceptions, and being aware of potential side effects, individuals can make informed decisions regarding their treatment and work towards better psoriasis management.

Psoriasis: THIS IS MY STORY‼️ #psoriasis #mystory #skyrizi #healthjourney #plantbasedlife
Psoriasis: THIS IS MY STORY‼️ #psoriasis #mystory #skyrizi #healthjourney #plantbasedlife Side Effects 1 Views • 4 months ago

Y'ALL! It was SO hard to try to condense my story down into a 1:30 reel, but I tried my best! The last 3 years with this has been CRAZY! I hope to record a longer format of this video on YouTube because I have SO much to say! This week has been monumental in this journey as I release myself from the medicine I've been on the past 3 years. I am truly grateful🙌🏽🙏🏽 #psoriasis #mystory #skyrizi #healthjourney #plantbasedlife #sukisession

Side Notes: Before the Pandemic, my health was in a good place. Eating majority healthy, working out 3-5 times a week etc. When everything shut down in March 2020, I started eating like crap every day, drinking almost every day, gyms were closed, wasn't working out, was barely sleeping and was stressing about the Pandemic. This created the perfect storm for the psoriasis to manifest. I had completely trashed my gut which houses 80% of our immune system.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease which is when your body basically attacks itself. It can't tell the difference between foreign cells and your own cells. Lifestyle choices can affect this and most autoimmune diseases can be reversed! Changing all aspects of my life and going plant-based have put me a great position to avoid this happening to me again.

Skyrizi is a super powerful drug with side effects of course. The biggest being that it weakens your immune system and leaves you susceptible to so much. Imagine being on a medicine like this through a Global Pandemic!! #psoriasis #skyrizi #rash

Skyrizi is a prescription medication that's helping many people manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Skyrizi was first FDA approved in 2019. It may be used to treat plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis in adults.

Skyrizi is a biologic medicine that’s also called an interleukin-23 antagonist. It works by attaching to the protein in the body called interleukin-23 or IL-23, which is involved in inflammation. By blocking IL-23, Skyrizi helps reduce inflammation, which improves the symptoms related to psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis.

After the first few doses, you only need to get Skyrizi every 8-12 weeks. It may be given as an intravenous infusion or injected under the skin. For injections under the skin, it comes in prefilled pens, syringes, and cartridges for use with an on-body injector.

Common side effects of Skyrizi include upper respiratory infections, headache, injection site reactions, urinary tract infections, fungal skin infections, low red blood cells, fever, joint pain, back pain, and feeling tired.

11 Natural Therapies (Outside of Drugs And Surgery) That Actually Work [free checklist]: https://curtis-alexander.com/

Skyrizi is used to treat psoriasis.

It’s mechanism of action is that it's an interleukin blocker. What that means is that eventually it's going to decrease the number of cytokines and chemokines that are produced in your body.

These substances are basically signaling proteins that lead to inflammation in your body.

Dosage

Skyrizi has a unique dosing schedule.

First of all Skyrizi comes in a 75 mg strength that you inject subcutaneously. You give two injections or 150 mg on day one, then you give 150 mg 4 weeks later, then you start giving 150 mg every 12 weeks.

The first month of dosing is what's referred to as a “loading dose”. The idea is to get your blood levels up a little higher earlier on and then level you out with the every 12 week dosing

Side Effects

Skyrizi does have some side effects that you need to be aware of.

First of all you can develop antibodies to use in Skyizi. This means that your body begins to develop antibodies to the drug and it can become less effective the longer you use it. You can see this in up to 24% of people who use it.

About 14% of people who use it can develop neutralizing antibodies. These types of antibodies actually make the drug ineffective.

The other type of side effect you can see is higher infection rates.

Remember Skyrizi acts on chemokines and cytokines. While they are involved in the inflammatory process remember that inflammation isn't always a bad thing. Part of your immune response involves inflammation. So when you knock that down it can lead to more infections.

You can see higher infection rate in up to 22% of users. Some of the more common infections tend to be upper respiratory tract infections and fungal infections.

I also warn people that you can see headaches in a small group of users as well as fatigue. But again these are only 3% to 4% of users.

One of the other things I get asked is if Skyrizi can cause weight loss?

It's actually not listed as one of the potential side effects for the drug. But keep in mind if you find that you're losing weight pay attention to if you are getting any sort of infections. If you're not feeling well because of infection there can be weight loss. But as far as Skyrizi directly affecting weight loss I think it's a long shot.

Because the drug can affect your immune system your doctor is likely going to monitor your labs throughout your use. I'll also test you for tuberculosis and monitor that as well.

How Long Does It Take To Work?

Skyrizi takes 3 to 14 days to reach peak blood levels. That doesn't mean it will take that long to start working. You may notice changes sooner.

But as far as peak effectiveness you're probably going to be looking at giving yourself at least a week or two on the medication to notice a change.

One of the biggest issues you see with people who want to use Skyrizi is that it costs quite a bit of money.

Sometimes we don't have any issues getting it through insurance other times you will. If that's the case you may want to look into financial assistance.

Here's a link to Skyrizi’s financial assistance program check it out see if you qualify: https://www.abbvie.com/patient....s/patient-assistance
