Bayer Pharmaceuticals, manufacturer of the birth control drugs Yaz and Yasmin and their generic versions Ocella and Gianvi, marketed by Teva Pharmaceuticals, agreed to settle over 8,250 claims for $1.7 billion. Launched in 2001, Yaz and Yasmin were the first brands of birth control pills to utilize a type of synthetic hormone to suppress ovulation in women and prevent pregnancy.

Multiple studies show a dramatic increase of having a heart attack, stroke, developing blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, or suffering a pulmonary embolism if you have taken these birth control pills. Other claims allege gallbladder injuries. In 2008, the FDA announced that between 2004 and 2008, more than 50 deaths had been reported allegedly caused by these pills. And the FDA's own study found a 74% increased risk of blood clots among those taking these pills. Due to Bayer Pharmaceutical's aggressive advertising, Yaz, especially, has become one of the most popularly prescribed birth control pills in the country. This generation of birth control pills includes a hormone called drospirenone. The hormone is a diuretic and slows the blood flow of your body. This complication has led to heart attacks, strokes, and even death for patients using Yaz or Yasmin. The drug can also cause a condition called deep vein thrombosis (commonly referred to as DVT). What this condition does is throw blood clots throughout the body and this blocks blood flow to vital organs. Blood clots can be extremely severe and lead to death in a number of cases. Generic name: Ethinyl Estradiol Dropirenone.
Brand names: Yasmin, Yaz, Rosal and Daylette.
Available as a tablet.

How to use it?
Swallow the tablet completely with half a glass of water. Do not break it and don’t chew on it.
If you want to start using this pill, it is advised to take it for the first time on the first day of your period. If you don’t then it is advised to take additional measures, such as condoms, for the first 7 days of use.
Do you experience severe diarrhea or do you need to vomit within 4 hours after taking the pill. Then you should take a new one when you stomach and intestines calmed down.

When to use it?
Ethinylestradiol Drospirenone is a combined pill containing the hormones estrogen and progestogen. It is one of the most common used oral contraceptives.

What is the correct dosage?
Always use the dosage and frequency prescribed by your own doctor.
- Take one tablet at a fixed time for 21 days, after which follows a pause of 7 days. During this pause you will experience a bleeding resembling a period.
- If you forget to take a pill, then always contact your doctor.

What are the side-effects?
- Common (1-10%): Depressed mood, headache, nausea, breakthrough bleeding, breast pain and vaginal discharge.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): depression, nervousness, somnolence, migraine, dizziness, high blood pressure, varicose veins, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, acne, rash, change in libido, change in body weight and increased sweating.

Safety:
This medicine is safe to use with any type of food and even with alcohol. In addition it is also safe to drive while using this drug.
However it can have interactions with other drugs. Therefore always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.

Pregnancy and Lactation:
First of all if you want to become pregnant you should stop using a combined contraceptive pill, however if you accidentally use it once while pregnant there seem to be no adverse effects for your unborn baby.
Regarding lactation, its use is not recommended during the first 6 weeks after delivery. Afterwards this medicine can probably be used safely. Always discuss this though, with your prescribing doctor.

This is SUCH a complex topic, so there are a few things that you should know up-front:
1. This is just my story...everyone is different.
2. I am NOT anti-birth control pills.
3. My aim is not to scare people...I just want to encourage you to take charge of your own health!

After making an Instagram post about my experience with the pill (https://www.instagram.com/p/CJmDZmVLSpX/?hl=en) I had hundreds of people reaching out to me with similar stories. I started taking the pill at 17 for no other reason except to prevent pregnancy...and it worked for me! It also got rid of my teenage hormonal acne and took away painful periods, as well. For most people, the pill prevents pregnancy without OTHER random side effects, but that was just not the case for me!

At 17, it felt like going on the pill was just a rite of passage. And when I asked my doctor about the side effects, they just told me about clearer skin and lighter periods. There were other potential side effects on the side of the package, but given my unique family health history, I didn’t seem to be at risk for any of that. It seemed like a miracle pill to me! In addition to all of this, I was also told that I could skip over the final week in my pack and skip my period (or my “bleed week”) altogether if I wanted. I still do not know if this is okay to do, but I was told by multiple doctors that it was fine.

Fast forward 8 years and I was suffering from abdominal pain, specifically on the right side right below the rib cage. In 2017, I had my gallbladder removed. After experiencing this, I went back to the pamphlets in my birth control and saw that it can cause gallbladder disease - in rare instances. You never think you are going to be a “rare instance” until you are one. I have talked to 2 separate doctors that agree that the pill was most likely the cause of losing my gallbladder. In 2020, I discovered Alisa Vitti and her book “In the Flo.” She talks all about hormonal health and using our hormones to our advantage when it comes to energy and more. This led me to another book called “Beyond the Pill” by Dr. Jolene Brighten. Her book was packed full of information about the pill, the process of coming off it, and Post Birth Control Syndrome (PBCS). This book inspired me to get off the pill and never look back.

So, how’s it going now that I’ve been off for about 5 months? The first couple of months were pretty great - everything seemed fine, no breakouts, AND my period came back after 49 days! But then, everything went haywire. I stopped getting my period, my skin started breaking out, my back broke out, my hair began falling out, and I was getting a migraine every day (this lasted about 3 months).

So what are we doing now? As I mention in the video, we are still NOT trying to get pregnant (I want to normalize my hormones first), so for the time being, we are just using condoms...I also recently started using Natural Cycles (stay tuned on my IG for more!).

Birth control pills are an effective form of contraception. They usually come in a round pack or a rectangular pack, and it's up to you, the user, to make sure that you take the pills on a consistent basis in order for them to be effective.

Unfortunately, all forms of birth control have side effects, and most of these side effects will improve if you continue to take the pill over a period of time. You may experience some headaches, some nausea, and some breakthrough bleeding when you're using this form of birth control. If you experience any side effects regarding blood clot formation, such as chest pain, leg swelling, leg pain, headaches that don't go away with Tylenol, any visual disturbances, although these side effects are extremely rare, they do happen to some patients. You should stop the birth control when you experience those side effects and call your doctor. Let me reiterate. Those side effects are extremely rare, and while the headaches and the breakthrough bleeding and the nausea are annoying, they will usually get better if you continue to take the pills consistently over two or three packs of birth control.

Yasmin is a form of birth control pill that has estrogen and drospirenone. Now, the regular birth control pills that you're familiar with have estrogen and a form of progesterone. So instead of having progesterone or a form of progesterone in the Yasmin, the drug is called drospirenone, which is different than the progesterone but acts similar to progesterone in helping prevent pregnancy. So if you're considering Yasmin for your form of birth control over that of the birth control pills you're taking currently or to start as your first type of birth control, you may want to talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner about the difference between Yasmin and the birth control pills that you're familiar with.

Yas and Yasmin are highly effective forms of birth control. They both contain estrogen and drospirenone, but in different balances between the estrogen and drospirenone. There's a difference in the number of placebo or sugar pills between Yas and Yasmin.

If you're considering those options as your new form of birth control, you should call your doctor or nurse practitioner to discuss the difference between the Yas and Yasmin, and also to discuss the difference between those two forms of birth control versus the other estrogen and progesterone pills you may be familiar with.
