MEDS Ed is an ongoing education series by CareOregon’s Pharmacy team. It’s geared to health care professionals involved in direct patient care at community clinics. Attendees leave with valuable tools and insights that improve how they can contribute to multi-disciplinary teams.

In this video I want to share some of the worst side effects of the drug Lantus, as well as give you a few other options.

Today, diabetes takes more lives than AIDS and breast cancer combined. Diabetes to put it simply is when the body has a hard time creating enough insulin to deal with blood sugar.

The drug Lantus is used to treat people with diabetes by physically injecting insulin into their body.
But there is a big catch. What do you think this catch is? Yep it's not the same insulin that your body creates, it's different, it's foreign.

So, the million dollar question is does that matter? Take a step back from the information overload of the internet and think about this. What do you think? For example Trans fats are man made fat. Instead of normal fats being used in cells trans fats get used and this makes cells weaker and causes all kinds of problems. I would say their is some similarities.

We all know trans fats are unhealthy.

Know back to Lantus. One of the nasty side effects someone can experience with this drug is cancer. The journal of Diabetologia recently published 4 studies. 3 of those studies showed an increase risk for cancer when taking this drug.

Another common side effect is having too low of blood sugar, this could cause trouble concentrating, irritability, trouble breathing and even fainting or possibly seizures.

Also, your body being the smart machine it is may reject the drug and an allergic reaction could take place.

Lastly it is an expensive drug and it will create a bunch of free radicals as it breaks down in the body.

You might be wondering, well is their a better options. 1 idea you could look into would be a plant called Purslane in a 12 week placebo controlled study people with type 2 diabetes who added 180 mg of this herb had a 44% improvement in their blood sugar levels.

Of course I have to talk about changing your diet, which I'm sure you already know to help with diabetes. Maybe cut back on the food that tastes really, really good.

Exercise is another thing. Generally it lowers blood pressure, as well as blood sugar levels. Usually it stays lower for the next 24 to 48 hours.

There are many other ideas when it comes to alternative medicine. It's less expensive, healthier no cancer or nasty side effects.
