Methadone Side Effects

Hello, my name is Dr. Rajy Abulhosn, Medical Director here at Confirm BioSciences. Today I want to take some time to discuss a powerful synthetic painkiller called Methadone.
Methadone was first synthesized in the late 1930’s and is most commonly used as a treatment method for those suffering from addiction to opioids like heroin, hydromorphone and oxycodone. Methadone is less addictive than morphine or heroin yet provides the same pain relieving benefits, so it’s often prescribed to those addicted to opioids to help with their painful withdrawal symptoms.
Methadone is most often used in a pill or liquid form in treatment centers or other medical settings however, some illicit methadone users will inject methadone instead. Methadone is a depressant and slows down the central nervous system causing a feeling of relaxation and temporary relieve from stress and anger. When mixed with other depressants such as sleeping pills, alcohol or other opioids there’s a greater risk of respiratory depression, coma or even death.
Some short term side effects of methadone use may include sedation, constipation, nausea, severe sweating, confusion, euphoria and impaired judgement. Long term effects may include kidney and liver damage, bone damage and mood disturbances.
Want to know more about the side effects of methadone? Click that link in the upper right hand corner to learn more. With its relatively low cost compared to other pain killers as well as wide spread use in drug treatment centers, methadone use is a growing concern among Americans.
According to the CDC, an estimated one third of all opioid related deaths may be attributed to methadone which is why it’s a good idea to include methadone testing in your standard pre-employment drug testing and school drug testing.
EDDP is a metabolite of methadone. Standard methadone tests can often fail to detect methadone so testing for EDDP is a more fail safe way of preventing false negatives.
We offer standard urine drug test cups that test for methadone and EDDP which detects down to 300 ng/ml testing back approximately 1-3 days. As well as our saliva drug test which detects levels down to 75 ng/ml and can detect use for up to 48 hours.

Opioids are a mainstay of treatment for moderate to severe restless legs syndrome (RLS) and dopamine agonist augmentation when first-line treatments have not worked. Andy Berkowski, MD of ReLACS Health explains the benefits and side effects of methadone among opioid medications, one of the most used opioids for RLS for at least three decades now.
Regardless of the potential for powerful relief of RLS, methadone is a DEA schedule II controlled substance and, like most opioids, misuse and/or overdose can cause severe and potentially life-threatening effects not limited to severe impairment, shallow breathing, coma, and death. Methadone can also be used inappropriately for non-medical purposes, and there is risk for dependence and/or addiction, even with appropriate use. Opioids require strict supervision and management by a licensed medical doctor or advanced practitioner.

💉“What if one dose of methadone could transform pain management for outpatient surgery?”
Today the APSF is diving into a groundbreaking study published in Anesthesiology & summarized by Brian Thomas, JD.
💡 Researchers investigated the use of single-dose intraoperative methadone in next-day discharge outpatient surgeries. Why? To reduce postoperative pain, minimize opioid use, and improve patient satisfaction—all while addressing the opioid crisis.
📊 This randomized, double-blind, dose-finding study compared methadone to shorter-duration opioids like fentanyl and hydromorphone. Patients were randomized to receive methadone or standard practice and monitored closely for pain, sedation, and side effects.
🧪 Results? Methadone reduced in-hospital opioid use significantly and showed a trend toward less home pain and opioid use over 30 days.
🏆 The optimal dose of methadone was 0.25 mg/kg of ideal body weight.
💊 Methadone may offer safer, more effective perioperative pain management for certain outpatient surgeries.

In this video, Dr Peter Coleman, who is Board-certified in Addiction Medicine and in long-term recovery himself, answers a viewer question about why methadone withdrawal is so difficult. Methadone is one of 3 proven forms of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Use Disorder. Suboxone (buprenorphine) and Naltrexone are the other 2 evidence-based forms of MAT.
-Safe, Comfortable Outpatient Detox
The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine has been a leading outpatient addiction treatment center since 1998. Our innovative withdrawal management programs, often referred to as The Coleman Method, have helped thousands of people free themselves from addiction to Alcohol, Opioids, and Benzodiazepines. Originally founded in Richmond, Virginia, our network has expanded to cover 10 cities across the US.
-3 - 8 Day Opioid Detoxification Process
For short-acting opiates like oxycodone, most patients complete their detox and begin Naltrexone therapy within 5 days. Longer-acting opiates like Suboxone and Methadone typically take 8 days. Our standard opioid treatment package in Richmond, VA includes the detox and 6 months of case management and Naltrexone therapy. As a non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone dramatically reduces cravings so that patients can focus on their recovery. We have a 98% success rate for completing detoxification and starting Naltrexone therapy. During the detox, we work with patients and their families to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. We also offer a convenient, 3-day outpatient alcohol detox and a Benzodiazepine Detox.
-Caring, Empathetic Environment
Our founder, Dr. Peter Coleman, understands first-hand the challenges our patients are facing due to his own personal struggle with the disease of addiction. He has been in long term recovery since 1984. Dr. Coleman has dedicated his career to treating addiction patients and creating a team and an environment conducive to long term recovery for his patients.

In the US, the government is battling the opioid overdose epidemic.
About 115 people die every day due to this problem and those numbers continue to rise.
The misuse of opioids affects the public health and economic welfare of the country.
One of the opiates that people commonly misuse is methadone.
Methadone is used in the treatment of moderate to severe pain.
Doctors can also prescribe it to treat narcotic addiction.
Sadly, some patients misuse their methadone prescription for a variety of reasons.
This affects them and their health in different ways.
When taken as prescribed by your doctor, methadone medication is safe and effective.
For patients with addiction, it works effectively if used together with comprehensive medication-assisted treatment which includes social support and counseling.
Doctors say that methadone works a lot like morphine but it’s effect on the body are slower.
It works by changing how the brain and nervous system respond to pain.
This makes you feel relief.
Methadone blocks the euphoric effects of opiate drugs such as codeine or heroin.
It also lessens withdrawal symptoms of opiates.
The pain relief from this drug lasts for about eight to 12 hours.
Studies have shown that methadone is effective in higher doses, particularly for those patients with heroin addiction.
Methadone is an effective treatment for suppressing cravings and reducing pain.
It has a long-term treatment period, usually one year or more.
No matter how it is taken, the effects are wide and varied as they depend on the individual’s body.
Possible Methadone side effects are constipation, vomiting (especially in the beginning of treatment as the body adjusts to the medication), light headedness, irregular sweating, dry mouth, fatigue and more.
These side effects are more likely if the medication is not taken as prescribed or above the therapeutic dose.
You will work closely with your doctor to find a dose that works for you.
If you experience any of these side effects, it’s important to communicate them with your doctor so that your dosage can be adjusted.
Sometimes, these side-effects can occur in the beginning stages of treatment and later subside once you have had time to get used to your dosage.
Fortunately, when methadone program requirements are followed and medication is taken as prescribed, it can be a huge help in recovering your life after addiction.

Methadone Withdrawal, Addiction and Treatment - Click here for more information: https://anrclinic.com/methadone-withdrawal-detox/
Methadone addiction is a physical health condition and must be treated as such. During the process of addiction, the brain’s chemical system becomes unbalanced, and it craves methadone in an attempt to regain normal function.
Methadone addiction may also result in unpleasant side effects, including blocking the brain’s ‘pleasure sensors’ rather than causing euphoria. Opioid abuse means using opioids without a prescription or using a higher dosage than was prescribed. People who abuse heroin or other opiates are more susceptible to methadone addiction due to their history of opioid dependency.
FAST & RAPID METHADON DETOX
Although a large number of rehabilitation facilities offer rapid methadone detox programs, these programs are not an effective approach. They do not treat the root cause of the brain’s chemical imbalances. Many methadone and substance abuse rehab facilities require ongoing visits for at least a few weeks, and all of them will only be treating the secondary effects of dependency.
In the 1990s, Dr. Andre Waismann developed the concept of ‘Rapid Detox’. Due to the success of his treatment, other rehabilitation facilities have tried to implement a similar model. However, many of the facilities trying to implement the rapid detox program lack the necessary medical information, experience, and knowledge to implement these programs safely and effectively. As a result, their detoxification programs have not had the intended results and may have caused further health complications. These programs are not able to provide personalized, custom treatment based on the individual’s endorphin-receptor balance.
Dr. Waismann has further developed his treatment from the ’90s into what we now know as Accelerated Neuro-Regulation. ANR is currently the only treatment option that returns the brain’s chemical system to its original pre-dependency state. Unlike other, more ineffective treatment models, Doctor Waismann’s latest ANR method focuses on restoring the patient’s optimal endorphin-receptor balance. Rather than waiting weeks or months to fully recover, patients are guaranteed a total recovery with a one-time-stay that lasts less than 30 hours.
ANR METHADONE REHAB FACILITY
Doctor Waismann’s game-changing breakthrough of the ANR model has revolutionized opioid therapy with the never-before therapeutic goal of nonregulation modulation to ensure optimal endorphin and chemical balance. As a result, the ANR method created a new reality as it is the only effective modern medicine method to truly defeat and overcome opioid and methadone addiction, dependency, and withdrawal.
As trusted by 24,000 patients around the world during 30 years of medical practice, Doctor Waismann is a leader in combatting the global methadone epidemic. The ANR procedure lasts for a duration of four or five hours and requires hospitalization of 30 hours. When patients first arrive at the industry-leading ANR Clinics in Tampa, Florida, Thun, Switzerland, or Tbilisi, Georgia, they will receive a medical evaluation. The initial medical examination will allow Doctor Waismann and his team to learn more about the patient to develop a patient-centered care plan. The medical assessment will include:
- Blood pressure monitoring
- Weight measurement
- Collection of information about electrolytes, liver functions, kidney functions, and blood count.
Whether you are seeking fast and rapid methadone or opioid detox that has been proven to be effective with thousands of patients, are struggling with methadone or opioid addiction, or overcome withdrawal symptoms, ANR Clinic has a team of compassionate and experienced healthcare professionals who will guide you with your recovery journey. Contact ANR Clinic today to learn more about our evidence-based revolutionary care methods that will help you fully recover within a short period of time to minimize your withdrawal symptoms as you recover.

Dr. Waismann identified the biological roots of opioid dependency; since then, he has successfully treated more than 24,000 patients worldwide struggling with opioid addiction.
Throughout his career, he has lectured and educated health professionals in dozens of countries worldwide to this day.
