Risperdal® (Risperidone) is an atypical antipsychotic drug which has been linked to serious and potentially permanent side effects such as gynecomastia, the development of female breasts in boys and young men. Increases in the hormone prolactin and lactation (breasts with milk) are potentially concurrent conditions.

Risperdal was originally approved by the FDA for adults suffering from schizophrenia or bipolar mania, but has been promoted and marketed so doctors increasingly prescribed it for children to treat ADHD, depression and behavioral problems-- health matters for which Risperdal® did not originally have FDA approval. These "off label" uses as prescribed by physicians are not illegal, however there are allegations the drug's manufacturer, Janssen, a division of Johnson & Johnson, withheld safety data and downplayed the gynecomastia risk.

Your Medication Risperidone

Risperidone is also known as the brand name: Risperdal

Risperidone comes in 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 mg tablets. Risperidone also comes in 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 mg dispersible tablets.

Risperidone is most commonly used for: bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or for irritability associated with autism. Risperidone may also be used for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, or for psychosis and agitation related to Alzheimer’s disease. Risperidone is usually taken by mouth once daily.

Standard dosing of risperidone ranges from: 0.5 mg up to 8 mg per day depending on treatment.

Some common side effects of taking risperidone include: sedation, drowsiness, headache, and weight gain.
Some less common side effects of taking risperidone include: slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, dry mouth, and nasal congestion.

Risperidone has shown increased death risk in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.

While taking risperidone remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling, or tightness of the chest
• Thoughts of self-harm
• Changes in your mood or how you act
• Shakiness or muscle stiffness

I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 with mixed features and rapid cycling and OCD a few months ago after over a decade of having symptoms.

Risperdal is a drug given to young boys to treat ADHD and a few other conditions. This drug has been known to cause female breast development in males. These cases are very serious and should not be taken lightly.

Risperidone is a second-generation anti-psychotic medication, primarily used in the treatment of various psychiatric disorders.
It works by modulating dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain, aiding in restoring the balance of these neurotransmitters.
Major indications of risperidone include the following.
In the treatment of schizophrenia spectrum disorder in adults and children of 13 years or older.
And to reduce irritability associated with autism spectrum disorder in children and adolescents aged 5 to 16 years.
Off-label uses include post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, and behavioral changes in dementia.
In this video, our primary goal is to explore the common Adverse Effects of Risperidone.
Risperidone is well-known to cause central nervous system side effects, which typically manifest as extrapyramidal symptoms, including the following.
Parkinsonism, which includes tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia, or slowness of movement.
Restlessness.
Sustained muscle contractions.
And involuntary movements, especially with long-term use.
Metabolic side effects include weight gain, hypoglycemia and risk of new-onset diabetes, and dyslipidemia.
Endocrine effects include low prolactin levels, galactorrhea, gynecomastia, sexual dysfunction, and menstrual irregularities.
Sedation and Somnolence, especially in the beginning.
Cardiovascular Effects, including orthostatic hypotension, QT prolongation, and increased risk of stroke in elderly patients.
Anticholinergic Effects, including dry mouth, constipation, and urinary retention.
And finally, neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, which is a rare, but potentially life-threatening reaction, characterized by hyperthermia, muscle rigidity, altered mental status, and autonomic instability.
