Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) - Use, Side Effects, Dosage Side Effects 0 Views • 24 days ago

In this video we will cover everything you need to know about Ceftriaxone, also known as Rocephin. We will discuss how and when to use it, we will cover its side effects, dosage and much, much more.

Generic name: Ceftriaxone.
Brand names: Rocephin.
Available as an injection or through IV.

How to use it?
- Injection: usually your doctor or nurse will inject ceftriaxone as a fluid into your but muscle or into a vein.
- Intravenous infusion: your doctor or nurse will insert the infusion. This will usually at least 30 minutes.

When to use it?
Ceftriaxone is part of a group of antibiotics called cephalosporin. It is a third-generation broad-spectrum antibiotic, which can be used to treat infectious with several types of bacteria. For example:
- Infections of the respiratory tract, like a pneumonia or an exacerbation of COPD.
- Infections of the skin, like a wound infection
- Infections of the urogenital tract, like urinary tract infections or syphilis.
- Gastrointestinal infections, like a bile duct infection.
- And it can be used preemptively before or after surgery.

What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- So in general your doctor might prescribe a dose of 0,5 - 4 grams of ceftriaxone 1x per day, ranging from a treatment duration of 1 day up to 14 days.

What are the side-effects?
- Common (1-10%): diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, inflammation of your stomach, skin rash, allergic reaction and changes in your blood values.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): headache, dizziness and vertigo.
- Rare (0.01-0.1%): fever, chills, anaphylactic reactions, elevation of liver enzymes and genital yeast infection.
- Very rare (0.01%): gastrointestinal haemorrhage, inflammation of the pancreas and blood clotting abnormalities.

Safety:
First of all there are no limitations for this drug regarding the usage of alcohol or driving a car.
However, ceftriaxone can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. Therefore always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
Lastly, ceftriaxone can usually be used safely when pregnant or when breastfeeding, but again discuss this with your personal doctor.

Ceftriaxone Mechanism and Side Effects
Ceftriaxone Mechanism and Side Effects Side Effects 0 Views • 24 days ago

Ceftriaxone is a broad-spectrum antibiotic medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as cephalosporins. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Here are some key points about ceftriaxone:

1. Mechanism of Action: Ceftriaxone works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Bacterial cell walls are crucial for their structural integrity, and by interfering with this process, ceftriaxone effectively kills the bacteria or prevents their growth.

2. Indications: Ceftriaxone is used to treat various types of infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is often employed in the treatment of respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, septicemia (bloodstream infections), and certain sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea.

3. Route of Administration: Ceftriaxone is typically administered by injection or intravenous (IV) infusion. It is available as a powder that must be reconstituted with sterile water before use.

4. Dosage: The dosage of ceftriaxone can vary depending on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and overall health. It is usually administered once or twice a day, and the duration of treatment depends on the specific infection being treated.

5. Adverse Effects: Common side effects of ceftriaxone can include pain or swelling at the injection site, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. It can also, rarely, cause more serious side effects like allergic reactions or severe diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis). Like all antibiotics, overuse or misuse of ceftriaxone can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

6. Precautions: It is essential to use ceftriaxone only as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Inform your doctor about any allergies or previous adverse reactions to antibiotics, especially cephalosporins or penicillins. Also, let your healthcare provider know about any other medications you are taking, as ceftriaxone can interact with certain drugs.

7. Special Considerations: Ceftriaxone can be used in pediatric and adult populations. It's also considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but as with any medication, it should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider.

8. Resistance: As with all antibiotics, the overuse or misuse of ceftriaxone can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. To combat this, it's crucial to take antibiotics only when prescribed by a healthcare professional and to complete the full course of treatment.

Ceftriaxone is a valuable tool in the fight against bacterial infections, but its use should be carefully managed to ensure its continued effectiveness and to minimize the risk of antibiotic resistance. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions when taking this medication.

Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interactions, Warnings | What is ceftriaxone used for?
Ceftriaxone, a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin class, is commonly administered via injection and is known by brand names like Ceftrisol Plus and Rocephin. It's utilized to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea, intra-abdominal infections, meningitis, surgical prophylaxis, Lyme disease, pediatric infections, Salmonella and typhoid fever, and as empirical therapy. Its mechanism of action involves interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell death. However, it's crucial to be aware of its side effects, ranging from gastrointestinal disturbances and injection site reactions to serious allergic reactions and blood disorders. Dosage varies depending on factors like infection type and patient characteristics, with warnings regarding allergic reactions, renal impairment, biliary effects, and potential interactions with other medications.
