Generic Name: hydromorphone

Trade Name: Dilaudid

Indication: moderate to severe pain

Actio:n alters the perception and reaction to pain by binding to opiate receptors in the CNS, also suppresses the cough reflex

Therapeutic Class: Opioid Analgesic, allergy, cold and cough remedies, antitussive

Pharmacologic Class: opioid agonist

Nursing Considerations:
 Assess BP, respirations, and pulse before and during administration - medication causes general CNS depression
 Narcan (nalaxone) is the antidote for overdose
 use caution with concurrent use of MAOI - avoid use within 14 days of each other
 may be used as an antitussive
 advised to dilute with NS prior to administration and to administer slowly to decrease CNS depression

Dilaudid is a brand name for the opioid hydromorphone. It is an opiate analgesic, a type of prescription painkiller. It comes in liquid, tablet, and extended-release tablet forms.

It is important to take this drug as prescribed by a medical professional and to only change the way you use it after first talking to a doctor.

While there are legitimate reasons to take this medication , it carries a number of serious risks, especially if abused. It can also interact dangerously if taken with a number of different drugs.

Derived from opiates, Dilaudid is a drug used in mild-to-severe pain management for soft tissue, bone injuries, third-degree burns, and cancer. Seven times stronger than morphine, Dilaudid disrupts the pain receptors in the brain, causing a sense of well-being and euphoria, making it extremely addictive both mentally and physically. Detoxing from opiate addiction can cause severe and life-threatening symptoms, such as joint and muscle pain, self-harm, insomnia, and suicidal tendencies.

The only laxatives that should be avoided are the bulk-forming laxatives, like psyllium. These laxatives increase the bulk of the stools, distend the colon, and augment peristalsis.
