Your Medication Acyclovir

Acyclovir is also known as the brand name: Zovirax

Acyclovir comes in 400 and 800 mg tablets as well as a 200 mg capsule. Acyclovir is also available in a 200mg/5mL suspension.

Acyclovir is most commonly used for: treatment of the shingles, genital herpes, cold sores, and chickenpox. Acyclovir may also be used for treatment of new onset Bell Palsy. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, acyclovir can be taken with food or on an empty stomach. Acyclovir should be taken with plenty of water. It is important to take this medication until the fully prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear.

Standard dosing of acyclovir ranges from: 400 mg to 1200 mg per day for a short time depending on treatment.

Some common side effects with acyclovir include: tiredness.
Some less common side effects include: headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

While taking acyclovir remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you:
• Have signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, itching, or hives
• Are feeling confused
• Experience hallucinations
• Experience changes in your mood or the way you act
• Are unable to urinate or experience a change in the amount of urination.
