Aimovig is in a relatively new class of drugs called CGRP's.

Basically that's a fancy term for saying that it can block a protein in your brain that causes inflammation and pain when you have a migraine.

Aimovig is something that you actually have to inject and you do that subcutaneously. Sometimes people get freaked out when they find out it's an injectable. But it's really not that bad if you do it the right way.

Now when it comes to side effects Aimovig is actually really well tolerated.

Most Likely Side Effects:

Constipation: the most likely side effect of a Aimovig is going to be constipation.

It occurs in about 1-3% of people and the severity tends to vary.

Immune System Issues: the other side effect that you can see happen is antibody development.

What that means is when you give Aimovig your body can actually develop antibodies to it making it less effective.

In a small number of people the antibodies that develop are called neutralizing antibodies.

In about 1% of people maybe even less they can develop these neutralizing antibodies and that will make Aimovig completely ineffective. But again, it's not very common.

Injection Site Reactions: basically when you inject aimovig you're doing at subcutaneously which means into the fat. But sometimes people get redness and swelling and maybe even a rash around that area you can see this in about 5 to 6% of people who take Aimovig.

Muscle Cramps/Spasms: In a small number of people you can get muscle cramps and muscle spasms. This is only one or 2% of users so again it's a small number of people.

One of the classes of people that I would be careful with the Aimovig is if you have high blood pressure because in a small number of people that has made it worse but again it's just a precaution.

Side Effects I Get Asked About (But Don’t Really Happen)

Sometimes I get questions from people about a couple of Aimovig side effects people worry about but don't really happen.

Aimovig Affecting Periods: in women they worry that Aimovig can affect their periods.

The truth is it's not really listed in any of the studies as a side effect and I haven't had it happen with any of the women that I have known who take Aimovig.

Aimovig And Hair Loss: Now there's drugs that can cause hair loss that's pretty well-established but Aimovig does not appear to be one of them so I don't really see any reason to be concerned about.

Aimovig coupon
Now while it's not a side effect one of the things that can happen is people can get a little bit of sticker shock about how expensive the medication is.

Here's a link to the Aimovig companies website where you can get a coupon if that's one of your concerns: https://www.aimovigaccesscard.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr-yn05vI6gIV8Ql9Ch0M7w0aEAAYASAAEgKvYfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Now if you have a Medicare Plan you won't be able to use this coupon. But if you have private insurance and you have a high co-pay it can come in pretty handy.
