In this installment of the Antibiotic Stewardship series, Dr. Krasner explores the antibiotic Vancomycin and its effects on skin and soft tissue infections. Dr. Krasner explains the appropriate screening processes for MRSA and the treatment methods utilizing Vancomycin. He begins by analyzing the gram-positive bacteria-fighting properties that Vancomycin possesses and establishes that this antibiotic is most efficiently used against Methicillin-resistant Staph Aureus because of these properties. However, Vancomycin is so often over-prescribed and over-used – especially when there are better medications such as Cefazolin and Zosyn.
