Bisoprolol is a cardioselective beta blocker.

It is extremely widely prescribed all over the world.

In the UK it is currently the preferred/first line of the beta blockers.

In part 1 we discuss the mechanism of action of bisoprolol. We look at how it is an antagonist of beta 1 receptors and how this produces a sympatholytic effect.

In parts 2-3 we continue to discuss clinical uses. We discuss its use as an antihypertensive in essential hypertension, its use as an antiarrhythmic in arrhythmias, its use as an antianginal in ischaemic heart disease and its use as a cardioprotector in heart failure.

In part 4 we look at dosing and side effects.
