Breo Ellipta combines an inhaled steroid with a long acting compound that dilates the airways. Marketed for both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD, it often fails to provide an ideal treatment for either. For most asthmatics preferred therapy includes inhaled steroids and short acting bronchodilators. The FDA recently linked long acting bronchodilators with increased hospitalization and death related to asthma. Optimal therapy for most individuals with COPD includes a long acting bronchodilator and a long acting anti-cholinergic but not an inhaled steroid. Breo often seems misused by patient and doctor alike.
