Ticagrelor is an antiplatelet drug which prevents platelet activation & aggregation. It is used along with low-dose aspirin (75-100mg) to prevent thrombotic events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). It is also used to prevent heart attack or stroke after certain heart surgeries like stent placement, CABG=coronary artery bypass graft, or angioplasty. It’s dose is –
90mg twice a day for the first year. After that 60mg twice a day.
Do not stop taking ticagrelor without doctor’s advice. Because discontinuation of ticagrelor increases the risk of heart attack/stroke.
Side effects of Ticagrelor are-
1. Dyspnea=shortness of breath
2. Gastrointestinal bleeding
3. Blood disorder bleedings
4. Hyperuricaemia=excess uric acid in the blood
5. Dizziness
Clopidogrel and ticagrelor belongs to same class (i.e. P2Y12 platelet inhibitor) but ticagrelor is superior to clopidogrel in the prevention of thrombotic events. Ticagrelor (BRILINTA or AXCER MRP: 576 for 14 tablets) is much costlier than clopidogrel (74 for 10 tablets).
