Keflex long off patent now is sold as generic cephalexin. Even though cephalexin has been available for over 50 years, it remains the fifth most prescribed antibiotic. Many patients routinely request an antibiotic for symptoms of a common cold or sore throat and often find obliging doctors. In spite of this, antibiotics including cephalexin fail to alter these conditions. Cephalexin only eradicates susceptible bacteria, not viruses, fungi or throat irritation due to allergies.

Cephalexin provides relief for a variety of streptococcal and staphylococcal infections. Examples include strep throat and impetigo. Cephalexin assists in clearing some middle ear infections, pneumonia and urinary tract infections. The American Heart Association approves cephalexin as a preventive antibiotic prior to dental procedures in those at risk of heart valve infection.

Cephalexin does not cause a significant incidence of adverse reactions. Those with mild to moderate penicillin intolerance often have no problems with cephalexin. For those with more severe penicillin allergy, prudence suggests avoiding cephalexin.

Alcohol decreases absorption of cephalexin. Tagamet and Zantac also lower blood levels of the antibiotic while cephalexin increases the serum concentration of metformin by about 30%.
