Your Medication Chlorhexidine

Chlorhexidine is also known by the brand name: Peridex.

Chlorhexidine comes in 0.12% oral liquid.

Chlorhexidine is most commonly used to treat or prevent mouth infections. After brushing and flossing your teeth, swish 15 ml of undiluted chlorhexidine in your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit out. Do not swallow. Wait 30 minutes after rinsing your mouth to eat or drink.

Some common side effects with chlorhexidine include discoloration of the mouth and excess tarter formation.
Some less common side effects include mouth or tongue irritation, gum pain, or swelling and numbness or tingling in the mouth.

While taking chlorhexidine, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
• Signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, tightness of the chest, etc.)

Chlorhexidine liquid needs to be stored at room temperature protected from heat. Use the measuring device received from the pharmacist or doctor for the oral liquid.
