Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used primarily as an antidepressant medication.
It works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the synaptic cleft by inhibiting its reuptake in presynaptic neurons.
This enhances serotonergic neurotransmission, which is believed to improve mood and emotional stability.
Major Indications of Sertraline include the following.
Major Depressive Disorder.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Panic Disorder.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
And premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.
In this video, our primary goal is to explore the common adverse effects of sertraline.
First up, neurological & Psychiatric Effects.
Common ones include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, agitation, and tremors.
Less Common ones include seizures, extrapyramidal symptoms, restlessness, and serotonin syndrome in severe cases.
Long-Term effects include emotional blunting, increased risk of suicide.
Gastrointestinal Effects nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, and dyspepsia.
Rarely, gastrointestinal bleeding and hepatotoxicity can occur.
Cardiovascular Effects include palpitations, mild tachycardia, QT prolongation, and orthostatic hypotension.
Endocrine & Metabolic Effects include weight Changes, initially, weight loss and later, weight gain.
And hyponatremia.
Sexual Dysfunction, including decreased libido and erectile dysfunction.
Other Effects include excessive Sweating and Withdrawal Symptoms such as dizziness, flu-like symptoms, and brain zaps upon sudden discontinuation.
