Griseofulvin (Gris Peg) is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails, including tinea capitis, corporis, cruris, pedis, and unguium. It works by binding to keratin in tissues, preventing fungal invasion, and disrupting fungal cell division. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, and fatigue, while less common effects include allergic reactions, photosensitivity, and confusion. Dosage varies by condition and patient age, with treatment duration ranging from weeks to months. It should be taken with a high-fat meal for better absorption. Griseofulvin interacts with drugs like warfarin, oral contraceptives, and cyclosporine and may cause a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol. It is contraindicated in pregnancy (Category X) and should be used with caution in breastfeeding, liver impairment, and individuals with hypersensitivity. Patients should avoid sun exposure and activities requiring alertness due to potential neurological effects.
