This medication, Donnatal, contains belladonna alkaloids which are made up of the drugs hyoscyamine, atropine, and scopolamine, as well as phenobarbital. The belladonna alkaloids help to reduce stomach and intestinal cramping by slowing the natural movements of the gut and relaxing the muscles in the stomach and intestines. These alkaloids are part of a class of drugs known as anticholinergics/antispasmodics. Phenobarbital, on the other hand, helps to reduce anxiety by acting on the brain to produce a calming effect. It belongs to a class of drugs known as barbiturate sedatives. Donnatal can be taken as prescribed by your doctor for the treatment of these symptoms. Remember to follow the recommended daily dosage and take it at the optimal timing for the best results.
