mitrex treats migraine headaches but does not prevent their occurrence. Migraine headaches affect up to 18% of women and 6% of men with attacks frequently beginning during the teenage years. As many as 35 million Americans suffer from periodic migraines.

Imitrex was approved in 1991 and now is much less expensive as generic sumatriptan. Several dosage forms of Imitrex are available and include oral, injectable and nasal preparations. Imitrex belongs to the triptan family along with Zomig, Axert, Maxalt, Relpax, Frova and Amerge. All of the triptans provide basically similar relief.

Imitrex stimulates one of the serotonin receptors in the brain and trigeminal tissues and may provide relatively rapid relief for moderate to severe migraines. Headaches of lesser severity may improve with aspirin or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent available over-the-counter or with a prescription.

When more than four migraines occur each month, preventive therapy appears more appropriate rather than additional Imitrex. Too frequent use of Imitrex often results in chronic daily headache also referred to as medicine overuse headache. This latter condition actually requires weaning off of therapy.
