Meropenem belongs to a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics.

Meropenem is prescribed for treating bacterial meningitis, complicated skin and structure infections, intra-abdominal infections, complicated appendicitis, peritonitis, nosocomial pneumonia or hospital acquired infections, complicated urinary tract infections, and intra and post-partum infections.

Meropenem is highly active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa but inactive against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium.

Meropenem is stable against the renal enzyme and therefore cilastatin, a specific renal enzyme inhibitor need not be administered with the medication.
