Your Medication Metronidazole
Metronidazole is also known by the brand name: Flagyl.
Metronidazole comes in 250, and 500 mg tablets, 375 mg capsule, 750 mg tablet, and 50 mg/mL and 100 mg/mL oral liquid.
Metronidazole is most commonly used for abdominal and gynecological infections. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, metronidazole is usually taken by mouth 2 to 3 times a day. Some types of metronidazole need to be taken on an empty stomach, while others can be taken with food. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses.
Some common side effects with metronidazole include headache, upset stomach, and yeast infections.
Some less common side effects include dizziness and a metallic taste in your mouth.
Do not take metronidazole and drink or use alcohol.
While taking metronidazole, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if:
• You are being treated for alcohol dependency
• You are pregnant or may become pregnant
All forms of metronidazole including the liquid needs to be stored at room temperature in a dry place. Use the measuring device received from the pharmacist or doctor for the oral liquid.
