Metronidazole is an antibiotic that treats bacterial vaginosis. Here we have Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, to tell us what it is and how it works.

Metronidazole is available as oral tablets or a topical gel for bacterial vaginosis. You’ll take the pill twice a day for a week, or use an applicator to apply the gel into the vagina at night for five days. It treats bacterial vaginosis by targeting the bacteria responsible, inhibiting the production of proteins needed for them to grow and spread. This stops the infection in its tracks, and eventually kills off the bacteria – your immune system will take care of the rest.
