Nitrofurantoin is a nitrofuran that acts as an antibacterial agent that is used for treating urinary tract infections.

This medication is available as capsule containing 25% of macrocrystal form and 75% of monohydrate form. It has slow rate of dissolution that causes less gastric side effects. However, nitrofurantoin can cause hepatotoxicity and peripheral neuropathy. In people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, it may cause hemolytic anemia.
