Ever get that burning feeling in your stomach, or feel that heartburn coming back? I will be discussing a common medication, called famotidine, used to treat heartburn, stomach conditions related to excess acid, and ulcers.

Famotidine is an over-the-counter drug that, when used for self-treatment, can relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach. Famotidine is sold under several brand names, including Acid Reducer, Heartburn Relief, and Pepcid. These products typically come in tablets or liquids.

For the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, this medication should be taken twice daily at a dose of 20mg for up to six weeks. If self-treating heartburn, take 10-20 mg up to twice daily by mouth, with a maximum dose of 40 mg per day. Famotidine is safe to take for patients over two years old. Take this medication as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist, or according to the product label.

Famotidine has some common side effects which include diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, headache, or dizziness. If you are taking this, do not drink alcohol. If you begin experiencing symptoms such as wheezing, itching, or chest tightness, stop taking this medication and call your doctor or pharmacist, as this could be a rare, but severe allergic reaction taking place. If you have kidney problems, you may need a lower dose. Be cautious with use in the elderly, as famotidine can lead to more confusion, lethargy, and dizziness in this special population.

In summary, famotidine is a common over-the-counter medication used in the short-term treatment of heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach. Take this medication as instructed , and if you have any questions, contact your doctor or pharmacist today.
