Headaches, body pains, and swelling can all be caused by inflammation in the body. Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs, or NSAIDs, can be purchased over the counter to relieve inflammation and pain. Today I will tell you about OTC NSAID medications like ibuprofen and naproxen.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to provide pain relief and reduce inflammation. Ibuprofen is the NSAID in several over the counter products like Motrin, Advil, and Pamprin. Naproxen is the active ingredient in Aleve immediate release and extended release products. They are both ingredients in many combination medications. Liquid formulations are available for children who cannot swallow pills. Always follow the directions on the package and talk to your pharmacist to make sure you give your child the correct dose.

Ibuprofen comes in 200 mg tablets. When using this strength, you usually take 1 to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not take more than 16 tablets in one day.

Naproxen is also available in 200 mg tablets. Usually you take 1 tablet every 8 to 12 hours. Do not take more than 3 tablets in one day.

Take NSAIDs with a snack or milk to avoid an upset stomach. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking NSAIDs. The most common side effects are stomach upset, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.

Do not take these medications if you are allergic to NSAIDs or any other ingredient.

Talk to your pharmacist before taking an NSAID if you have any stomach or intestine conditions, are pregnant, or take any other medications (including other OTCs).

Always follow the instructions on the package unless instructed otherwise. Do not take more of an NSAID than instructed by the package or a healthcare professional.

Call your pharmacist or doctor right away if you have unusual bleeding or bruising, high blood pressure, weakness, dizziness, chest pain, swelling, or skin reactions while taking an NSAID.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and naproxen are used to relieve pain and inflammation. Talk to your pharmacist to make sure that you have an appropriate medication and dose. They are there to help you find the best over the counter medication for you!
