Senna is a laxative available over the counter all over the world.

It is a stimulant laxative and therefore works by stimulating bowel motility.

It is only converted into active form once it reaches the large bowel and therefore only takes action once in the large bowel.

For this reason it can take several hours before you feel the effect of it.

In this video we discuss mechanism in more detail. We also look at when senna is used in clinical practice and dosing.
