Apixaban or Eliquis (the brand name) is an anticoagulant medicine that decreases the chance of blood clots forming in your body. Its main use is used for preventing a stroke if you have atrial fibrillation (AF). It was developed as an alternative to Warfarin which for many years was the only medical option for decreasing the chance of strokes in atrial fibrillation.
Apixaban has important advantages, one being that it has a fixed dose, the dose doesn't constantly change as it does with Warfarin. It also doesn't require frequent blood testing like Warfarin. The real big advantage is that you can eat whatever you want when you take Apixaban because it doesn't change the level of the medication in your body, unlike Warfarin.
