The relatively new Vraylar falls into the family of atypical antipsychotics traditionally prescribed for schizophrenia. An advertising campaign seeks to boost its sales for mania associated with bipolar disorder. Whether this drug actually provides benefits commensurate with the $1400 monthly cash price or roughly $45 a pill remains to be determined. Studies leading to FDA approval failed to demonstrate significant difference between it and Abilify or Risperdal both of which are available as relatively inexpensive generics. Lithium offers an inexpensive option for mania and provides the lowest incidence of re-hospitalization for manic attacks. Atypical antipsychotic drugs often cause severe side effects and should be restricted to those truly in need.
