Methotrexate is one of the anchor drugs in rheumatoid arthritis. It is one of the not preferred drugs it is a safe medication. The side effects are of 2 types, mild and severe side effects. In general the risks are minimal. In general, the mild side effects may include vomiting sensation, tummy pain, some people may experience e hair fall, the serious side effects include abnormality of the liver test and the effect on the blood counts, the bone marrow, so before starting on Methotrexate, the complete blood count is looked, it looks at the hemoglobin, the total count, the platelets, we do a kidney function tests to look at the creatinine and do a liver function test. We start the Methotrexate in people whom all these tests are normal and while on treatment also we periodically check these tests to minimize the effects of side effects.
