Pradaxa is an anticoagulant medicine used to stop blood clots forming within the blood vessels.

Pradaxa is used in the prevention of dangerous blood clots in the veins in adults who have undergone certain surgeries, blood clots that can cause stroke, as well as recurrent deep vein thrombosis -a condition where blood clots occur within the veins of the legs- and pulmonary embolism -when blood clots occur in the lungs.

It is also used to treat already existing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Pradaxa capsules contain the active ingredient dabigatran etexilate, which is a type of medicine called a direct thrombin inhibitor. It is used to stop blood clots forming within the blood vessels.

Dabigatran etexilate works by binding to thrombin, a central enzyme necessary to make blood clots, and inhibits its action which stops the rest of the blood clotting process. As a result, blood platelet cells cannot be bound together to form blood clots.
