Tamoxifen is an anti-oestrogen medicine that is mainly used to treat breast cancer, but is also used in fertility treatment.

Tamoxifen works by blocking the effects of oestrogen.

This is effective in treating breast cancer because most breast cancers are sensitive to oestrogen, and their growth is encouraged by the presence of oestrogen in the blood. By inhibiting the effects of oestrogen, tamoxifen stops the cancer cells from growing.

In the treatment of infertility, tamoxifen stimulates ovulation by blocking oestrogen receptors in the brain. This causes more follicle stimulating hormone (FSH for short) and luteinising hormone (LH for short) to be released. FSH stimulates the ovaries and LH causes the release of an egg from the ovaries.
