Pharmacology Of Fluoxetine (SSRI) - The Antidepressant Medication
Pharmacology Of Fluoxetine (SSRI) - The Antidepressant Medication Side Effects 1 Views โ€ข 2 months ago

Video transcript :-
Fluoxetine belongs to the drug class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and is primarily used as an antidepressant among its other uses.
Major indications for Fluoxetine include the following.
Major depressive disorder, commonly known as depression.
Generalized anxiety disorder.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Panic disorder.
Bulimia nervosa.
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
And in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.
Fluoxetine works by selectively inhibiting the serotonin transporter, or SERT, which prevents the reuptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin into presynaptic neurons.
This action increases the levels of serotonin in the synaptic cleft, which enhances serotonergic neurotransmission, leading to improved mood and emotional regulation.
Unlike older antidepressants such as tricyclic antidepressants, fluoxetine has minimal effects on norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake.
Fluoxetine is administered orally, and is available as tablets, capsules, and liquid formulations.
Delayed release capsules are also available and used for weekly dosing in some individuals.
The drug is well absorbed into the body with an oral bioavailability of more than 70%.
Once in the bloodstream, it is highly plasma protein bound.
The drug is primarily metabolized in the liver by converting into active metabolite norfluoxetine.
Excretion is primarily through urine.
Some common adverse effects of fluoxetine include the following.
Neurological effects such as Insomnia, agitation, headache, anxiety, confusion, autonomic instability, and restlessness.
Sexual dysfunction, including decreased libido, and delayed ejaculation.
Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, diarrhea, and dry mouth.
Cardiovascular effects such as QT prolongation.
Reduced appetite, which can lead to weight loss.
Serotonin syndrome, typically in overdose.
Hyperthermia.
And muscle rigidity.
Absolute contraindications for the use of fluoxetine include the following.
Concurrent use with MAO inhibitors such as phenelzine and selegiline as it increases the risk of serotonin syndrome.
And hypersensitivity to fluoxetine.
Relative contraindications include bipolar disorder, as fluoxetine can trigger manic episodes.
Severe hepatic impairment.
And pregnancy.

What is the correct dosage?
Unfortunately I canโ€™t provide you with guidelines for the correct dosages, as these differ a lot depending on the specific indication, the side effects you experience and the severity of your complaints. Therefore always use the prescribed dose and frequency your doctor gave you.

However the usual dose most doctors prescribe for an adult will be 20mg a day, which if necessary can be gradually increased over a period of several weeks to months up to a dose of 60mg a day.
In children older than 8 years, the usual starting dose is 10mg a day. This can ultimately be increased to 20mg a day if necessary.

In addition it is usually safe to drive while using Fluoxetine, however it can cause you to become drowsy, sleepy and/or dizzy. If you experiencing any of these side effects then please do not drive.

Prozac (Fluoxetine) What are the Side Effects? | Watch Before You Start!
Prozac (Fluoxetine) What are the Side Effects? | Watch Before You Start! Side Effects 0 Views โ€ข 2 months ago

Prozac or Fluoxetine is a medication that is used to treat mostly Depression but can also be used to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and a severe form of PMS called PMDD . Get a Doctors perspective and learn the symptoms of depression and anxiety and how this medication can play a role in you treating it. You'll learn about both common and some of the more rare side effects that you should watch out for.

Prozac (Fluoxetine) is in the family of medications called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI). They influence the amount of Serotonin that is available to help with mood and other functions of the body.

With depression you tend to have symptoms like difficulty concentrating, remembering things or making decisions. Fatigue, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness. People experience sleeping problems, mood swings, a loss of interest in things that you once enjoyed, appetite changes, generalized pain, persistent sad or empty feelings and even suicidal thoughts or attempts.

Those who are going through anxiety you may have symptoms such as sudden and unexplained onset of a rapid heart rate, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, pain in your chest, fear of dying, numbness and tingling throughout your body or just a generalized feeling of anxiousness all the time that you just canโ€™t explain.

If you are experiencing these symptoms you need to seek help from a professional. Go see your doctor and get an accurate diagnosis to figure out a good treatment plan for you. Remember depression and anxiety are real medical conditions and should be treated just as diabetes or high blood pressure need to be treated. You shouldnโ€™t feel any different treating any one of these medical conditions.

We'll give a good overview in the video of the common side effects but its important to remember that most side effects if any are transient and can be minimized by working with your doctor. We will discuss more concerning side effects such as serotonin syndrome as well.

Despite overwhelming evidence and even FDA black-box warnings, Prozac withdrawal symptoms tend to get blamed on the patient rather than the drug itself.
Prozac can have extraordinary side effects and debilitating withdrawal characteristics for certain persons. Disturbingly, these patients tend to get disregarded and minimized for their very real suffering.

Do Your Symptoms Require Prozac?

SSRI drugs such as Prozac are used in treating MDD (major depressive disorder). There are about half a dozen SSRIs that the FDA has approved for treating depression, each having similar characteristics and efficacy. Prozac is the one that remains approved for prescribing to young people, and that is possibly why the number of Prozac prescriptions tends to outweigh the other drugs in this class.

Prozac alternative treatments are available but sadly ignored in the main by doctors and others who may not have been trained in such methods, using non-drug-based protocols. Alternative to Meds Center specializes in alternative treatments for Prozac withdrawal, and for recovering natural mental health without prescription drugs.

Alternative to Meds has expertise acquired over 15 years of helping clients through tapering and withdrawal of antidepressants. We have published evidence clearly demonstrating that more than three-quarters of our clients tapering off fluoxetine or other drugs do better by tapering off them and replacing prescription drugs with a holistic lifestyle and other non-toxic choices to authentically and truly improve their health.

Risks of Prozac

In addition to questions about its value as an antidepressant, Prozac also presents some significant risks. First, common negative side effects include nausea, increased anxiety, trouble sleeping, and fatigue. While less rare, some patients also report significant changes to their mood, uncontrollable muscle spasms, tremors, and a decreased libido. One of the most serious possible side effects is increased thoughts of suicide. There is also a heightened chance of developing serotonin syndrome while taking Prozac. Because the drug interferes with the natural serotonin uptake process, itโ€™s possible for you to end up with too much serotonin. Increased serotonin levels subject you to all sorts of negative symptoms on top of Prozacโ€™s side effects and the initial condition that prompted your doctor to prescribe Prozac in the first place.
To stop using Prozac, itโ€™s necessary for patients to slowly taper their dosage because stopping suddenly can lead to withdrawal syndrome. Additionally, itโ€™s possible for your body to adapt so thoroughly to Prozac that it becomes physically dependent on it just to function normally, making it even more difficult to transition away from use.

Prozac, Zoloft, and Luvox
Often, the names of Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox, and other drugs are easily confused, as they are all classified as antidepressants and SSRIs. The three are used so interchangeably it might make a person wonder, what is Luvox (fluvoxamine)? Is Luvox the same as Prozac? Is there a difference between Prozac and Zoloft? Each of these drugs has a different active ingredient. Prozac depends on the active ingredient fluoxetine. Meanwhile, Zoloft has the active ingredient sertraline, and Luvox has the active ingredient fluvoxamine. All these ingredients have the same basic purpose, but they affect your body in diverse ways. For example, Prozac has different withdrawal symptoms than Zoloft, Luvox side effects differ from Prozacโ€™s, and Zoloft uses differ a bit as compared to Luvox uses. Although both Prozac and Zoloft are Luvox alternatives, the smallest of differences could lead to a significant and different impacst on your health.
