Generic Name: Levothyroxine

Trade Names: Synthroid, Unithroid, Levoxyl, Eurhryox, Tirosint

Pharmacologic Class: Thyroid product

Therapeutic Class: Hormone

Indications of Levothyroxine: Levothyroxine is a thyroid supplement used to treat hypothyroidism. It can also treat certain types of thyroid cancer or goiters.

Mechanism of action of Levothyroxine: Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of T4. In hypothyroidism the body has low levels of T4, so this man made synthetic form of T4 will restore it to normal levels which restores function all over the body including metabolism, gluconeogenesis, protein synthesis, cell growth and development of the brain and central nervous system.

Therapeutic effect of Levothyroxine: Levothyroxine restores normal hormone balance by replacing the depleted thyroid hormone T4.

Now that you have an overview of what it is and what it does, let's dive into the side effects of levothyroxine in this video!

Tirosint vs Levothyroxine - The case for Switching Thyroid Medication
Tirosint vs Levothyroxine - The case for Switching Thyroid Medication Side Effects 0 Views • 27 days ago

Tirosint is a T4 only thyroid medication but with some twists.

Many patients report significant improvement in hypothyroid symptoms when switching from T4 only medications like Levothyroxine and Synthroid over to Tirosint.

But how can that be? Especially when Tirosint is a T4 only medication?

This occurs for several reasons:

1) Inactive ingredients -

+ Levothyroxine and Synthroid contain MANY inactive ingredients (complete list in the video) which your body may be reacting to and limiting absorption. These inactive ingredients may be causing negative side effects that mimic hypothyroidism or limit your ability to reach the optimal dose.

Tirosint has 3 inactive ingredients and 1 active ingredient making it the "cleanest" thyroid medication (T4 only).

2) Decreased absorption -

+ Due to these inactive ingredients the absorption of Levothyroxine and Synthroid may be inferior to that of Tirosint. The fewer inactive ingredients means the more thyroid hormone that will be absorbed which means the better you symptoms will be. This is also very important for hypothyroid patients who have GI related conditions such as SIBO/SIFO, GERD and low stomach acid. Tirosint is more easily absorbed and utilized than other forms of thyroid hormone due to these reasons.

Who should consider using Tirosint?

- Patients with GI related issues
- Patients who don't tolerate Synthroid or Levothyroxine
- Patients with multiple sensitivities or food allergies
- Patients with Leaky gut or increased intestinal permeability
- Patients who don't tolerate T3 containing medications like NDT and/or liothyronine/cytomel
- Patients who are extremely sensitive to medications and supplements
- Patients who have experienced some improvement on Levothyroxine or Synthroid but still have room for improvement

If you have any questions please leave your comments below and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks!

Armour Thyroid versus Synthroid

In this video, we're going to talk about Armour Thyroid and Synthroid. What is the main difference between them, and is Armour Thyroid better than Synthroid?

Synthroid

Synthroid is a synthetic thyroid hormone—T4. T4 has to be converted into T3 to be active. Another name for T4 is levothyroid or levothyroxine.

• It takes 4 weeks to start making changes.
• If you're not converting T4 to T3, Synthroid is not going to work.

Armour Thyroid

This is a natural extract from a pig's thyroid.

• It contains T4, T3, and calcitonin (an important thyroid hormone).
• It takes 2 weeks to start making changes.

Some symptoms of a hypothyroid:

• Tired
• Cold
• Hair loss
• Mental sluggishness
• Weight gain

*I believe most hypothyroid problems are secondary to something else.

Other natural thyroid extracts:
• Nature Throid
• NP Thyroid

If you have a negative reaction to T4, T3, or calcitonin, and you have extreme fatigue or flu-like symptoms—you may have Hashimoto's. If you have Hashimoto's and you take thyroid extracts, it will make you very tired. Or, you may also be having a reaction because of some of the inactive ingredients in the product.

Armour vs. Synthroid
I personally like Armour Thyroid, but I'm not telling you to take one versus the other. I just want to give you some information so that you can do further research.

Levothyroxine (Synthroid or Euthyrox) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interaction
Levothyroxine (Synthroid or Euthyrox) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interaction Side Effects 0 Views • 27 days ago

Levothyroxine (Synthroid or Euthyrox) – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Interaction
Levothyroxine, marketed under brand names like Synthroid and Euthyrox, is a synthetic thyroid hormone used to treat hypothyroidism, often due to primary hypothyroidism, goiter, thyroid cancer, or as part of a thyroid suppression test. It replaces or supplements thyroxine (T4), converting to the active hormone triiodothyronine (T3) in the body, thereby regulating metabolism and energy. Typical adult dosage starts at 50-100 micrograms daily, adjusted based on thyroid function tests. Side effects include weight loss, tremors, and nervousness, while serious effects may involve chest pain and irregular heartbeat. Levothyroxine interacts with antacids, calcium, iron supplements, and certain foods like soy and high-fiber items. It is generally safe during pregnancy but requires caution in patients with cardiovascular disease and long-term use may affect bone density. Regular blood tests are crucial for monitoring.

7 Weird Side Effects of Levothyroxine You Need to Know.

Have you ever wondered if the medication you're taking could be causing some unexpected changes in your body? Are you experiencing symptoms that seem out of the ordinary but are unsure if they relate to your treatment? And most importantly, could these unusual effects be something you need to address right away?
In this video, we're diving deep into the seven weird side effects of levothyroxine that you need to know about. Understanding these potential side effects is crucial because they could impact your health in ways you never imagined. By the end of this video, you’ll know exactly what to watch out for, how to recognize the signs early, and what steps you should take if you’re affected.
We will also be understanding levothyroxine and its uses, how to take it, and how to manage these side effects through lifestyle and dietary adjustments.

Levothyroxine is a synthetic version of thyroxine (T4), a hormone usually produced by the thyroid gland. This medication is primarily used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by an underactive thyroid gland that does not produce sufficient thyroid hormones. Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, hair loss, and sensitivity to colds, among others. By supplementing the body with levothyroxine, individuals can experience relief from these symptoms as the medication helps restore the balance of thyroid hormones in the body.
To ensure maximum absorption of levothyroxine, take the medication on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning. This means waiting at least 30 to 60 minutes before eating breakfast or drinking anything other than water. To make up for a missed dose, take it if you forget to take a dose, and take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for your next dose. In this case, just skip the forgotten dose and take the next one at the usual time. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose. Certain foods and beverages can interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine, particularly those containing calcium, iron, or soy. Consuming these can significantly reduce the medication's effectiveness, so it's best to plan meals accordingly.

Levothyroxine Side Effects - Complete List + Dosing Guide for Patients
Levothyroxine Side Effects - Complete List + Dosing Guide for Patients Side Effects 0 Views • 27 days ago

In this video, I go over the complete list of Levothyroxine side effects ranging from weight gain to hair loss and everything in between.

Yes, Levothyroxine can cause hair loss and it can also cause weight GAIN. How can that be if levothyroxine is supposed to boost your metabolism?

In this video I explain how the metabolism of thyroid hormone in your body from T4 to reverse T3 may help explain why many people actually gain weight on this particular medication.

I also go over the recommendations I give to patients if this happens to them.

I also go over how to determine which thyroid medication is right for YOUR Body and how to dose your levothyroxine.

When patients have reactions to levothyroxine it's from 1 of 3 reasons typically:

1) they are reacting to a filler ingredient or a dye within the medication itself.

2) they are converting or metabolizing the thyroid hormone into by products that don't promote proper activity

3) they are getting too much thyroid hormone for THEIR body (this one is less common)

The side effects when patients react to fillers or dyes include reactions like facial swelling, edema, hives, itching sensation, etc.

The side effects from improper metabolism include reactions like weight gain, hair loss, slower than normal metabolism, cold hands/extremities, etc.

The side effects from TOO much medication include hot flashes, tachycardia or rapid heart rate, palpitations, hair loss, intolerance to heat.

The treatment for each of these reactions is quite different and I explain what to do depending on how you are reacting.

Levothyroxine Mechanism and Side Effects
Levothyroxine Mechanism and Side Effects Side Effects 0 Views • 27 days ago

Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). The thyroid gland in the human body produces two main hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which play a crucial role in regulating the body's metabolism, energy production, and overall growth and development.

Levothyroxine is primarily used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This deficiency can lead to a range of symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, hair loss, and depression. By providing the body with a synthetic version of thyroxine, levothyroxine helps restore normal thyroid hormone levels and alleviates the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism.

Levothyroxine is available in various brand names, such as Synthroid, Levoxyl, and Euthyrox, among others. It is usually taken orally in the form of tablets or capsules. The dosage of levothyroxine is determined by a healthcare provider based on factors such as the patient's age, weight, severity of hypothyroidism, and other medical conditions.

It's important to note that proper dosing and regular monitoring are crucial when taking levothyroxine. Too much or too little thyroid hormone can have significant effects on the body's metabolism and overall health. Therefore, patients prescribed levothyroxine often undergo periodic blood tests to ensure that their thyroid hormone levels are within the appropriate range.

While levothyroxine is generally considered safe and effective, there are potential side effects and interactions with other medications. Common side effects may include headache, nervousness, increased appetite, and changes in menstrual cycle for some women. Interactions with certain medications or supplements can also affect its effectiveness or lead to adverse effects.

If you suspect you have a thyroid condition or are experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions when taking levothyroxine or any other medication.

Signs You Are Taking Too Much Levothyroxine (When to LOWER Your Dose)
Signs You Are Taking Too Much Levothyroxine (When to LOWER Your Dose) Side Effects 0 Views • 27 days ago

Signs you are taking too much levothyroxine and when to know if you need to lower your dose. It's quite common for thyroid patients to accidentally take TOO much levothyroxine.

Levothyroxine is the most commonly used medication to treat low thyroid (of all types). Unfortunately, it only works if you are using the correct DOSE, however!

And there are many people out there right now, perhaps you, who are taking either too much or too little. The side effects associated with taking too much or too little are almost the complete opposite.

If you've been taking levothyroxine or Synthroid and you are NOT feeling better then this video is for you.

While it is more common for people to not take ENOUGH levothyroxine (meaning their dose is too small) there are still plenty of people out there who are taking too much levothyroxine.

When you take too much levothyroxine you will start to experience some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism as well as a few added symptoms associated with the medication itself.

Signs your dose of levothyroxine may be too high include:

#1. Irritability
#2. Hair loss
#3. Anxiety
#4. Insomnia
#5. Muscle weakness
#6. Fertility issues
#7. Rapid heartrate
#8. Palpitations
#9. Diarrhea or loose stools
#10. Heat intolerance

SURPRISING Side Effects of Levothyroxine (No one talks about these)
SURPRISING Side Effects of Levothyroxine (No one talks about these) Side Effects 0 Views • 27 days ago

Levothyroxine is the most commonly prescribed thyroid medication on the market and many people have no idea what kind of side effects it can cause.

Here's the list that every thyroid patient should know about if they are taking it:
1. Weight gain
2. Increased cancer risk
3. Hair loss
4. Dementia risk
5. Bone density concerns

The good news is that up to 30% of all thyroid patients reading this may be able to get off their thyroid medication, so these are not necessarily side effects that you have to suffer with forever.

If you like the idea of getting off using supplements to help you get off your thyroid medication, check out this video next:
