Understanding the Common Side Effects of Telmisartan (sold under the brand name: Micardis, which is registered trademark),

Welcome to our educational video by Dr. Lukasz Kiljanek, a Board Certified Nephrologist, Hypertension Specialist, and Internal Medicine physician.

Telmisartan a widely prescribed medication for high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure or kidney disease. While it is highly effective, it's important to be aware of potential side effects. In this video, we'll discuss common side effects.

Cough: Some people might experience a persistent dry cough while taking Telmisartan. If you develop a cough, let your healthcare provider know. There are other medications that provide almost the same benefits as Telmisartan but may not cause a cough.

Dizziness: Dizziness can happen, especially if your blood pressure lowers too much or if you are dehydrated.

High Potassium level: Telmisartan can cause your potassium levels to become high. Your healthcare provider will likely monitor your potassium levels, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Telmisartan or increasing the dose of Telmisartan to make sure potassium stays within a safe range.

Increased creatinine level: Creatinine level can go up, and this sometimes indicates that the medication is actually working. Blood work will be needed to monitor creatinine levels to ensure it remains within safe ranges, usually 3-4 weeks after starting Telmisartan or increasing the dose of Telmisartan.

Always notify your healthcare provider if you develop any side effects or have any concerns or questions about your medication. They can provide the best advice and support for your specific situation.
