Are you experiencing pain that’s affecting your daily life? Not sure which pain medication to ask your doctor about? Join Pharmacist Michael as he compares two commonly prescribed pain medications: oxycodone and hydrocodone. In this video, you'll learn about their effectiveness, side effects, and special considerations to help you make an informed decision. Plus, we’ll cover some natural pain relief methods to complement these medications.
🔍 Key Points:
Effectiveness: Oxycodone is more potent, making it suitable for severe pain but with higher abuse potential. Hydrocodone is effective for moderate to severe pain and is often combined with acetaminophen.
Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, drowsiness, constipation, and dizziness. Oxycodone can cause more intense euphoria and severe constipation at higher doses.
Acetaminophen: Hydrocodone is available only in combination with acetaminophen in the US. Excessive acetaminophen can cause liver damage, so caution is needed.
Natural Pain Relief Methods: Explore physical therapy, hot and cold therapy, massage, acupuncture, mind-body techniques, diet, and supplements to complement your pain management plan.
🚨 Special Considerations:
Allergies and medical history should be discussed with your doctor before starting any medication.
Be mindful of drug interactions, especially with grapefruit juice, alcohol, and certain antidepressants.
📞 Consult Your Healthcare Provider:
Always consult with your healthcare provider to determine which medication is best for your particular condition and pain management needs.

What Is Vicodin Used For? In this informative video, we will discuss Vicodin, a medication commonly used for managing pain. We’ll explain its composition, which includes two key ingredients: hydrocodone and acetaminophen. You’ll learn how hydrocodone functions as an opioid analgesic, providing relief from pain by interacting with receptors in the brain and spinal cord. Additionally, we’ll cover the role of acetaminophen in pain relief and fever reduction, and how this combination makes Vicodin effective for treating moderate to moderately severe pain.
We will also touch upon the scenarios in which Vicodin is typically prescribed, including acute pain following surgery or injury, as well as chronic pain when other treatments have proven ineffective. However, it’s important to note the potential risks associated with Vicodin, including common side effects and the classification of the medication as a controlled substance. We will emphasize the importance of using Vicodin under medical supervision to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Drug Cards Daily | Episode #2: hydrocodone/APAP (Norco, Vicodin) | Treating Acute and Chronic Pain
This episode of Drug Cards Daily is on the drug hydrocodone/APAP. Hydrocodone/APAP has a variety of brand names but most commonly known as Norco or Vicodin. It is a combination product containing an opioid and analgesic. Hydrocodone/APAP is typically used in the management of both acute and chronic pain. It comes in a tablet, solution, and elixir form. The main concerns are the potential for abuse, the CNS depressing effects, and not exceeding more than 4000 mg/day of acetaminophen (APAP). Constipation is a very common concern due to the opioid component so recommending a stool softener is highly recommended.
