I've been taking Sertraline for a few months now and share my ongoing experience. The side effects in month 2 and 3 are generally less severe. Thank you for following along with my journey, the last few weeks have been somewhat difficult and a few side effects from my early experiences of sertraline have reappeared; I think this is down to a change in routine during the current Coronavirus 'shutdown'.
Fed up of trying to get information about Sertraline only to be confronted by overly complex explanations? Looking for someone to walk you through the experience and highlight the highs & lows?

If you decide to stop taking sertraline there is a risk of your body experiencing something known as discontinuation syndrome - the negative effects of sertraline withdrawal.

Usually discontinuation syndrome happens when your course of medication is stopped too quickly, such as quitting cold-turkey after taking an antidepressant for a period of time. The advice is that if you wish to stop taking antidepressants you should consult your Dr and taper your dose lower and lower over a period of weeks. There are ways that you can regulate mood using different SSRIs with longer a half-life to manage the chemical changes aswell, your GP will be happy to advise.
What are the Symptoms of Discontinuation Syndrome?
Sertraline Withdrawal can induce the symptoms of discontinuation syndrome; this can involve physical and emotional side effects that can be difficult to deal with. Common experiences involve:
Nausea
Vomitting & Diarrhea
Headaches
Sweating
Disturbed Sleep
Brain Zaps
Dizziness
As well as familiar signs of heightened anxiety and mood swings. In some cases a return of thoughts regarding harming oneself can occur. Again, careful management with your Dr is key to avoiding these experiences.
How long does Discontinuation Syndrome last?
Most people who suffer these side effects find that the withdrawal symptoms of discontinuation syndrome alleviate after about 3 weeks but can perputate for longer in rarer cases. This time period can be quite challenging and is one of the key reasons that Drs aim for a gradual decrease in medication over a longer time period. This gives your body time to get used to the withdrawal without the shock of going cold turkey.
What can I do to prevent Discontinuation Syndrome?
The most important thing is to seek medical advice prior to stopping your antidepressants. Your Dr should be part of the conversation regarding tapering your dose at a steady rate in order to minimise the risk of discontinuation syndrome affecting you. Drugs such as SSRIs have a profound effect on the chemical balance in the brain and time must be spent recalibrating slowly over a period of time.
I advise that you have also invested time in some form of talking therapy in order to unpick your mental illness and provide some tools for self-management. This will not only help in the long-term but also if there are any side effects of antidepressant withdrawal.
If you are certain you want to stop antidepressants, good luck with your journey and remember to take it slow, under guidance from a medical professional.

It's safe to say I am still glad I finally made the decision to take antidepressants. The side effects of sertraline were not fun, but the journey is better for them. If your GP has suggested sertraline/zoloft to help your anxiety or depression it is useful to see how the medication settles after some time. Let me know how your journey is going and join mine! I avoided taking antidepressants for a long time and finally had enough of trying to cope on my own. If you have been prescribed SSRIs or any form of antidepressant it is likely you want a good idea of the side effects you might experience. Sertraline Side Effects will be similar to the experience of any SSRI, so hopefully this video remains useful no matter the type or dose of SSRIs that you currently take. Good luck on your journey!

This problem of antidepressants making you feel worse can happen when we use it for anxiety or depression. With depression, you can feel even more depressed after you take it, but if you keep taking it, that effect wears off. The problem is more pronounced with anxiety. Taking it can make your anxiety spike and feel even worse than before you took the medication.
So why would we even use this medication to treat anxiety? Because the effect is usually transient, meaning it goes away after several days. For some people it may persist and then they have to stop the medicine, but it usually goes away.
Why does it happen?
Researchers from the University of North Carolina identified another pathway in the brain that gets activated with serotonin. Serotonin activates one pathway that helps mood and anxiety, but it also activates another pathway that increases a brain chemical called corticotropin releasing factor also called corticotrophin releasing hormone. This hormone is normally secreted in response to stress or a perceived environmental threat. This activates the body's fight or flight response that is intended to protect you from a threat. But when there is not real threat to respond to, you experience that adrenal response as anxiety.
The researchers found that serotonin can trigger this stress response through the corticotrophin hormone release. This finding has led to new research on a drug that can block this hormone during the initial phase of your treatment until you get fully onboarded with the antidepressant.
To address this problem, we start with a low dose of antidepressant and slowly increase the dose to reach a therapeutic dose (titration). Sometimes we will use When you are fully onboarded with your medication, your doctor would taper you off the benzodiazepine and you would remain only on the antidepressant to treat your anxiety.

The side effects were challenging at first because I was at my lowest, and suddenly getting hit by nausea or an upset stomach wasn't something I really wanted but for me, I knew the jounrey would be worth it.
I made this video to share the reality of the common side effects of Sertraline because it can be scary when you start and feel like the only person who has had to go through this process.
My own experience with Sertraline really began in January 2020. I had taken prior to that but because I know better than someone who has spent years qualifying as a GP, I decided to stop taking Zoloft and manage it on my own. What an idiot. So January 2020 I managed to get to my GP and ask for a prescription. This started a journey that I wouldn't change, despite the challenges.
If you want to follow the entire journey you can watch my experience of Sertraline in the playlist below. I explain the side effects and progress daily during the first 2 weeks:
https://www.youtube.com/playli....st?list=PLKD89x7OCbI
It is rewarding to see the shell I was on Day 0 vs the latest update. Well, I think so anyway. You will learn that Sertraline cause strange vivid dreams, upset stomach, headaches, anxiety, emotional mood swings, weight gain but then peace, and space to find my happiness.
If you are already taking Sertraline and have some questions, I also have a playlist that tackles the most commonly asked questions about taking an antidepressant:

A Toronto woman has come forward with a powerful warning about the drug Ozempic, which has become popular because of the dramatic weight loss some people say it has helped them to achieve.
Emily Wright’s doctor prescribed the drug to treat Type 2 diabetes but she now has a condition known as stomach paralysis – and she believes it was caused by Ozempic.
“Ozempic has ruined my understanding of food and my relationship with food and I have no understanding or knowledge of when I’m going to get better,” Wright says.
As Nathaniel Dove reports, the drug is also linked to other negative effects, like suicidal thoughts.

Taking Ozempic? What To Avoid, Who Shouldn’t Take It, Factors That Worsen Side Effects & Cancer
Ozempic (also known as Semaglutide, Wegovy and Rybelsus) is a medication used to treat Type 2 diabetes and has been recently being used for weight loss purposes. It is a GLP-1 agonist, meaning that it binds to GLP-1 receptors to cause decreased gastric emptying, satiety (feeling full), and improved insulin release from the pancreas. However, use of these medications can cause unwanted side effects including nausea, vomiting and hypoglycemia (a low blood glucose level). Certain ways of taking the medications, along with taking other herbal medications or prescription medications while taking Ozempic/Semaglutide, can all increase the risk of side effects. In this lesson, we discuss important information and considerations for using Ozempic, including what interacts with it, patients who shouldn’t use it, and ways to reduce risk.

If you or a loved one has thought about taking Ozempic or any other similar weight loss drugs, you are going to want to watch this video until the very end. Today, I am going to explain what Ozempic is, how it works for weight loss, and what you should consider if you are taking or thinking of taking semaglutide based drugs.
Ozempic is the brand name for the drug semaglutide, falling under the GLP-1 drug class. Some of these drugs you might know by the name of Ozempic, Wegovy, and Trulicity. These drugs are used to control weight loss in users using a different method than previously applied drugs. Instead of using amphetamine based drugs that essentially “sped up” the calories-out portion of the calories-in-calories-out equation, they are used to control the calories-in portion.
These new drugs, such as Ozempic, are now manipulating the calories-in half of the equation by controlling appetite at the neurological level as well as delaying gastric emptying to help you feel more full for longer periods of time, again helping to curb appetite.
For those that need Ozempic medically, this drug has been an absolute game changer. While being able to combat the weight gain that is associated with type 2 diabetes, it is able to do so without the worrying side effects of other drugs.
I find it common, sometimes even coming from myself, that people are quick to blame someone being overweight for their lack of dedication and effort to combat their severe weight issue. However, that is not always the case - they might be doing the same thing that everyone else is doing in their pursuit of weight loss. The problem is, they could be such a metabolic mess, that despite their best efforts, they just can’t achieve the same results as someone else.
While the intended use of Ozempic is noble and helpful, the misuse of the drug is rampant. People are running to using semaglutide products such as Ozempic in a pursuit of losing 10 lbs for their upcoming vacation. This has resulted in issues for the people that actually need the drug, namely: a supply shortage along with the price of the drug skyrocketing making it less affordable to those that really need it.
Now, this brings forward the issue of the unintended side effect of Ozempic and similar weight loss drugs; where is that weight coming from? is it all fat, or is it something more? You might not know this, but a significant amount of weight loss does not simply come from fat stores, but also from lean muscle tissue. This becomes a major problem for anyone taking these drugs and is something that they need to be made aware of.
In any case of weight loss, there is going to be a portion of that weight that comes from body fat and a portion that comes from muscle as well. However, it is up to you to maximize fat loss while minimizing muscle loss. With drugs like Ozempic, the weight loss is rapid making it hard to control just how much muscle you are losing along with the fat being burned.
Studies have shown that taking weight loss drugs like Ozempic resulted in a loss of muscle tissue being between 25-35%
That’s not good.
In my profession, if I were responsible for someone losing 25-35% of muscle mass, that would be cause for major concern. This would actually lead to the presence of a skinny-fat physique, which is something that is undesirable. Someone who is skinny fat does not have that is lower bodyweight, but does not carry any significant muscle mass.
The problem with being skinny fat, especially at the end of a weight loss journey, is that there is a limited supply of metabolically active tissue. This means that if you were to resume eating the way you were before, you’d be packing on fat just quickly as you did before you started your path to losing weight.
The trick? Start strength training.
The benefit of strength training is that it gives you metabolic forgiveness; the more lean muscle you carry, the less effect food has on you metabolically. You can have that cheat meal without as much worry than if you were not training. If you focus on your efforts in the gym and rely less on drugs like Ozempic, you are helping yourself metabolically, aesthetically, and you are leaving more of the drug available to those that actually need it.
Make sure to keep watching to the end to hear about how important your nutrition is in your pursuit of weight loss. It can't be overlooked even for a second.

You may know semaglutide as Ozempic, an injectable medication used in people with Type 2 diabetes. Ozempic can help manage blood sugar, and it can also lower the risk of heart attack and stroke if you also have heart disease. Some semaglutide side effects can be bothersome and make the medication difficult to tolerate. But the good news is that they usually subside over time. Although rare, there are also some serious side effects to know about.

Ozempic, a medication developed to manage type 2 diabetes, has been in the news a lot lately because of one of its signature side effects: drastic weight loss. Both Ozempic and Wegovy, Ozempic’s counterpart approved specifically for weight loss by the FDA, are brand names of a drug called semaglutide. Semaglutide is one of several drugs that mimics a crucial digestive hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1, or GLP-1. It amplifies a process our bodies perform naturally.
GLP-1 is released in our intestines when we eat, and there are receptors for the hormone in cells all over the body. In the pancreas, GLP-1 promotes the production of insulin and suppresses the production of glucagon. This helps insulin-resistant bodies, like those with type 2 diabetes or obesity, manage blood sugar levels. In the stomach, GLP-1 slows gastric emptying, extending the feeling of being full. In the brain, GLP-1 suppresses appetite, which also promotes satiety and curbs hunger, so we eat less.
In late 2022, a rush to use Ozempic off-label for weight loss, likely prompted by its sudden rise in popularity in social media, led to a shortage of the drug for people who need it. But more drugs like semaglutide are currently in the process of being approved by the FDA to be prescribed for weight loss, likely signaling an end to the shortage and a promising new generation of medical treatment of obesity.

Ozempic (& Wegovy) Side Effects | How They Work, What They Do, And Why They Cause Issues
Ozempic (which is the medication Semaglutide; and has different formulations known as Wegovy and Rybelsus) is a medication used to treat Type 2 Diabetes and has been used more recently for weight loss purposes. These medications are glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, meaning that they “mimic” natural GLP-1 to activate these GLP-1 receptors in the brain and the gastrointestinal system to promote satiety and reduced gastric emptying. However, these affects can also cause issues, including side effects (adverse effects or adverse reactions), which we discuss in this lesson.

UPDATE - The study discussed in this video has received many criticisms and has been since redacted. We will be monitoring for further publications on the subject.
Ozempic, a popular medication for weight loss and diabetes may have alarming side effects on eye health. Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, has been linked to an increased risk of stroke within the eye, raising significant concerns for those taking this medication.
Dr. Allen reviews the study findings, explains the symptoms of NAION (Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy), and discusses what you should know if you're taking or considering Ozempic.
Can Ozempic blind you? Find out in this video!
