Antibiotic Review: Ceftriaxone (Rocephin)
Characteristics: 3rd Generation Cephalosporin
Long half-life (8hrs) allowing for daily dosing
Resistance to beta-lactamases
Can cross into CNS
Uses: Respiratory tract infections
UTI’s
SSTI/Bone and Joint
Gonorrhea
Sepsis
Intra-abdominal
CNS-Meningitis
Surgical prophylaxis
Microbiology:Gram negative organisms:
Including: E coli., H flu, Klebsiella, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and meningitidis, P mirabilis, Serratia
Doesn’t cover: Pseudomonas
Gram positive: Usually not used, but may have coverage
Anaerobes: C. diff is resistant
Administration: IM or IV
IM administration: Dilute according to package insert to obtain either a 250ml or 350ml concentrations (can be diluted with sterile water, NS, D5W, or Lidocaine 1%)
IV administration: can be given as IV piggyback in 50mls/100mls over 30 minutes or given a an IV push in 10mls over 3 to 5 minutes
Pregnancy category B
Small amounts of Rocephin can be found in milk, use caution
Adverse Reactions: Generally well tolerated
